ah.. this takes me back

old-school:
1 = l
3 = e
4 = a
5 = s
6 = g
7 = t
0 = o
i know im missing some there..

new-school:
1 = i
2 = r
3 = e
4 = a
5 = s
6 = g
7 = l
8 = b
0 = o

+ = t
\/\/ = w
more weird combo''s like that...

j can be used for y
e.g. j00 = you
u is capitialised unless theres a y in the word, i think.

bah.. i''ve forgotten a lot of it.

This seems like it''s a spin-off of the "#gamedev has finally gone to hell" thread where msn12b said:

"Wow, I guess I''m not as 31337 as you are!"

and someone (CobraA1) asked for clarification. This was my clarification:

31337 when translated literally means "elite". The 3''s translate to E''s the 1 translates to an L and the 7 translates to a T, due to the similarity in their appearance. esp in fixed width fonts. I believe it originates on the old BBS systems in which the "elite" would share cracking/hacking techniques and tools. In the circles I travel in nowadays, 31337 is used as a derogatory term. As a noun meaning an infantile individual who has an exagerated self opinion, and/or an individual who doesn''t "talk" normally. i.e. an overabundance of abreviations and canned substitutions. Members of 2600 often suffer from the 31337 stereotype.

Aparantly I didn''t list enough of the character translations.

At least this is the most recent reference to it that I''ve seen on the boards.

it''s "l337" ("elite"), not "l338" ("leeb"? )

I don''t think there are really any character translations. It''s more subject to what seems right then anything else. Besides, j00 people forgot about the MiXeD cAsE stuff that goes on.

I suppose l338 would make sense if you pronounce the 8 ("lee"-"eight"). Maybe that was the idea behind it? Who knows. As screwed-up of a language as it is, I prefer English to all this crap.

Well first of all you guys are forgetting 9 which is used a g, as in 9amedev. And for added 1887 points you can use ø for O, ß for B or S, ü for u and other such gnarly tricks. Also try to add in squiggles wherever possible, as in ׆¬ wiše 9µy ¤¤¢

Second of all, if you go to 3DActionPlanet they have a really cool "1887-iser" thing where you can type in names and it 188t''s them for you.

If you count so-called "script kiddies" (aka leet people) there you go... Those are people who inflate their ego by downloading trojans and portscanners and thinking they're so great when they crash some poor bloke's machine.

One thing I''ve always wondered... Does anybody *actually* use this as a regular form of communication? The only people I know do it as a joke or as a derogatory things as SiCrane was saying.

if you take a look at some of the sites that list defacements (http://www.attrition.org/security/lists.html etc) you''ll see a few "real" hacking groups do use 1337 talk

My friend and I created a sort of "1337^1337" chat that we used to harass Half-Life server admins. They could never figure out what we were saying... ah, the good ol'' days.

The modern meaning for l337 or 1337 or l33t is an annoying idiot who gets netbus or bo3k or other such rubbish and takes control of other people''s computer''s, refers to themselves as a ''hacker'' and then blames themselves for any thing that goes wrong with a computer, and who doesn''t know the first thing about programming, ie they think their ability to use DHTML is an amazing feat which will make millions for them. Let me give you an example. A person I know, on finding out about the recent Microsoft break in claimed that they did it. Now is that a stupid thing or what.

And by the way, the reason I know all this stuff about these people is:
a) I was one when I was about 7 years old. (This was before I could irritate people on a message board fortunately).
b) I know a few at school, and they are irritating.

Please state the nature of the debugging emergency.
