So ive been programming in TURING for about 2 years now, and I'm ready to get started with Java. I know Object Oreinted programming, but I am having trouble starting. I donwload the newest version of Java from the official site with the NetBeans IDE. I tried following the getting started faq that came with it, and found it hard to get it working. I'd really like to get to the point where I can start learning the syntax and other JAva related things, but the getting started thing is confusing. could someone give me a quick guide so I can get started?

Try the Java Tutorial

It's also labeled "Getting started", but I don't think it's the same as the "Getting started FAQ" you mention, and it's pretty good. It worked for me. ;)

Since you are just starting, don't use NetBeans. Use notepad and the command line. Also read The Java Tutorial from front to back. There is a huge amount of information in there and it starts at the beginner level.

Jester's right.

Write "Hello World" in Java and once you've got that compiled and running then you're on the right track.
