I have a question about developing games for the sony playstation (PS / PS2). i''l waste no time in introducing it, how would, say for instance, I develop games for the playstation. not saying i want to, just what would i need if i was, as in what language do i use, what special software / hardware would i need, what special permissions / copyrights / liscenses would i need, etc. thanks for the help, if anyone can, i hope...

I don''t know about PS2 programming but the typical PSX development kit consists of
1. PC
2. PSX Development card (available from SN Systems) and a TV to be used as the monitor.
3. Gnu C/C++ compiler (runs on PC but creates MIPS code)
4. Sony libraries, utilities and the accompanying docs
5. Controllers, Memory card connectors etc.

Optionally there are
6. Debugger (i don''t think it works all that well, but maybe Sony has fixed it)
7. CD emulator (to test your streaming etc) It actually uses an external hard disc for this but slows it down to make it look like a CD timing-wise.
8. Artist Card. basically a card that lets you see how your pictures would look on PlayStation.
9. Development (Blue) Playstation - basically your normal playstation but without any protection - so you can play teh CDs with your own game on it without having to put it on the expensive protected (black) CDs

I know there were attempts at making alternatie development "solution", notably from the Metrowerks but I have never managed to make them work. Perhaps these have been fixed by now.

I have never worked on a PS2 dev kit, just looked over the shoulder of people who did but my impression was that their dev kit looked similar to the PSX one.

Check out www.snsys.com for details, these are the guys who make the kits.

I''ve read that Sony will only let you buy the PS2 dev kit if you''ve released at least one title on PSX. do you guys know if this is correct?

The netyaroze program is on longer running.

As for PS2 dev kits, they are stand-alone items, meaning you don''t need to use a workstation to make the games and then the dev kit to test them. Instead, the PS2 dev kit allows you to write and test on the same machine (from what I''ve heard).

Are you even trying to be intelligent?

I know a guy with a Yaroze (black playstation, C++ support) but he isn''t a programmer, he just bought it because he knew they were rare and expensive and his father is a millionaire. He just uses it to play ordinary PlayStation games. A Yaroze used to cost £600 (probably $600 in the US. Electronics and games are much more expensive in the UK) and it was basically a Playstation with a CD burner and an on-board development environment. You could play ordinary PSX games and burn your own CDs, but only other Yaroze users could play Yaroze made games.

Please state the nature of the debugging emergency.
