I had a problem with SDL audio initialize: although no errors were produces, the sound was weird (to say the least). After some experiments I found, what although I requested 16-bit unsigned sound samples, they were treated as signed instead. After I converted my audio code to work with signed data, everything began to work nice. Not so big problem, but I wonder, what was the reason. (Platform: Windows, compiler: MinGW).

As an alternative to using SDL for sound, you could use FMod. It's very easy to install and use.
