yeah, i tried google. but it's an obscure subject and i can't make sense of the results. actually using that link i gave can't possibly be that hard, i just need a starting point

ECWP is a protocol layered over HTTP for the purpose of streaming ECW-compressed data. ECW stands for "enhanced compression wavelet", and it's specifically designed for the compression of satellite imagery, as the resulting image format contains extensive embedded details about map projections, pixel resolutions, and so on. It was designed by Earth Resource Mapping, so presumably they have all the specification information. I'd check there for more info.
