i will clear up what i ment.

say you are a bard lvl 1 your starting hp will be 100 for say would you have it set so you go up in a random like ran 50,100 or set 100 so ever time you lvl you will get 100 more hp but if its random then there 50-100 then its alwasy different.

me and my buddy cant figure out the best way i like random so no one will be the same but he like set because all the other games use set lvls.

what do you think would be best for the players anyone can post i just would like to know some other options or just your input on what you would do.

thanks.

Hi I am canes's friend and what i meant is to have a modifier for the HPs you gain each level. Such as when you level the more HP you will gain the more stamina you have Also each level will have a base amount that you will automatically gain so that going from Level 1 - 2 you will gain say 17 then from Level 2 - 3 you will gain 26 so you will still gain more HP but it will kind of be based on your gear and your sta.

Alright, firstly, this should probably be in Game Design rather than here.

What I'd suggest, is to write out the formulas, and then playtest each one by running through some possible in-game situations. ie. Make up a situation that could arise in-game (a player of a certain level, with certain stats levels up), and then run the numbers for this situation through each formula by hand. Do this with a number of test situations, and see if either formula has any serious balancing issues, or can produce unexpected results that could unbalance your game. It's also helpful for this to figure out the maximum and minimum possible values for situations if randomness is involved.

Assuming both systems are balanced, and don't have any serious flaws or complications, it's really just a choice for you to make - players will likely accept whichever you decide to put in as long as it works well. Oh, and just for reference purposes, many games make use of stats with modifiers on them. [wink]

Also, normally anyone posting about an MMORPG project would recieve a bit of a lecture from several users about the difficulty of such a project, but as you have thus far given me no reason to assume you aren't doing things properly, and as this topic isn't specifically about it, I'll just provide links to a few articles that are quite good for anyone developing or considering developing an MMOG:
- Eternal Lands Postmortem (Parts 1 to 3)
- MMOG Considerations
- A Beginners Guide To Creating An MMORPG
- So you want to make your own MMORPG?

//EDIT: Also, check out this thread in Help Wanted, an interview with Radu Privantu, creator of Eternal Lands.

Goodluck with it. [smile]

Not a problem. [smile]

Don't be overly discouraged - while it's important to have a realistic view of how complex and difficult this type of project is, it can be done. You just need to put in the hard work, and do all the required work, such as designing it properly, and learning the neccesary programming skills. I'm sure if you stick at it, you'll be able to pick up the required skills, and in the meantime you'll have plenty of time in which to refine your game design, so that when you're ready to start coding you'll know exactly what you need to do.

Good luck with it, and remember, although it's a long road, it can be done if you stick with it, put in the effort, and don't give up.

The GameDev.nett front page Feb 2005 article on Randomsness, while it lacked concrete examples, I believe, sounds like another GOOD place to look at. Since you ask a random sorta question/ problem.
