Hello. Recentrly my PC has been doing some crazy stuff, and I think its probably a virus or some spyware. Basically, the executable is located in c:\windows\system32\elitejky32.exe (using WinXP pro), and it writes constantly in the registry some keys, one of them says my country and other stuff, and the second one is a plain write HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE...\Run so that it starts everytime windows does. I cant find the exe in win32, nor in a console, so I tried erasing it from Linux (it worked), but then it regenerated again (obviously by some other process or something like that). Do anybody here knows whats going on or has had the same problem before??? I looked into symatecs website, and other antivirus looking for new threads but seems like this one isnt documentes. Obviously, I performed a system scan with norton 2005, av antivirus, and ad aware, all of them with up to date definitions but they dont find anything strange. I could monitor the registry activity with sysinternals' regmon, but with process explorer, this exe isnt even shown... One last thing, it constantly opens iexplorer windows with a link to who knows where (its just a picture that seems like a webpage about spyware), and I dont use iexplorer... Any help highly appreciated (more than just saying "reinstall windows") Thanks

download spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, run 'msconfig', download a registry cleaner. Look in msconfig and uncheck everything, save for those that you KNOW (110% sure) what they are. Then examine the ones that you unchecked, run a search in 'regedit', and delete them. It's basically a witch-hunt.

Ive been doing that with 0% success. I deactivated all boot-loading apps in msconfig, basically I only have msi core center and norton checked, but as I said, deleting the elitejky32.exe from the registry is worthless as it regenerates itself, I also tried didabling all services, but same unsuccess case.

Ill try that spybot app ya say though

boot in safe mode, wipe all unnecessary stuff from registry, remove that bad exe *from system folder*. Don't sure, tho, if you can boot in safe mode in winxp.

Also, patch you system, as it is possible that you are re-infected all the time

Sorry pal, next time take your time to read the entire post, I already said i deleted it from linux, but that there is something else that regenerates it everytime its erased...

then, remove that "something else" from registry and from disk... look better in registry.

Or as i have said, you are re-infected.

i doubt virus placed itself into some legit executables, nobody does that these days... and there's aint no reason for virus to re-register itself in registry if it is also registered in some other, less obvious place.

another obvious thing about removal, in case you'll get really new virus, you should remove such executables from windows/system32/dllcache/ too, BTW. Windows restores system files.

glad to see you fixed it mate. I just had a similar experience yesterday, but instead of freaking out like I usually did, I coolly launched into my search and destroy mode and eradicated the bastard(s).

I'm starting to feel that virus hunting is fun.
