Alright, I want to make an RPG. Something simple, but 3D. I don't know any programming languages, and don't know how to get started. I've made some short games with Dark Basic, but that's not real programming. I want to learn a language like C++ or Basic, but I can't afford profressional tools. Any help?

You could start off with learning C++ with a book; I would suggest picking up Sam's Teach Yourself C++ in 21 days that proved to be a good book for myself. I also used some online resources for reference when programming; basically if you have a question you can just google it and you will most likely find an answer (might take some prodding, but you will find it). Here's a free tutorial on About.com for C/C++. It's pretty good for reference and learning beginning to medium programming styles.

You will also need to pick up a compiler and IDE; if you don't want to shell out the cash for Visual C++ .NET 2003 (something like $100 at retail stores) you can download Dev C++ which is based on the GNU G++ compiler ported to Windows. That can be downloaded from here. Borland C++ BuilderX is also a free compiler and it's based on the Borland compiler.

After that it comes down to how dedicated you are in learning how to program; spend hours learning syntax, even more hours debugging, and then more hours writing better code. It's a learning process that never ends; but it's best to start as soon as possible! Remember to stock up on caffinee products as well. This website also has some tutorials you can find at the top of the page in the Resources section on the menu.

Good luck!

How would I go about writing the game? Should I use an engine, or should I write my own engine, and put pieces together? I really just want to make a character that can walk around a town, attack, and interact at the moment. A complete game is far from my ideas right now.

Not to discourage you, but is it possible you could start with something 2D? A 3D RPG sounds like a lot for a first project.

You could start by look at Chris Hargrove's Intro to 3D Graphics Programming: Volume I, which can be found here. Maybe you'll see how 2D might be more your style. For now anyway.

I would like to thank you guys for helping me, especially since I got the help so fast. Im looking into the Into to 3D programming now. But I have some questions as to getting 3D and 2D objects, like models and textures, along with music and sound and so forth. Do people recruit a team for a small project (as in learning project) or use premade stuff?

It all depends on your budget. I know I could never afford to hire someone to do that for a "fun" project, so I'd do it myself or ask a very willingful friend. Most of the time premade stuff will be used because it is easily obtainable and relatively cheap. You can even find rolyalty free items to use with Google. If the project is just for your own enjoyment, you could really use anything you wanted, you just could not release it.
