My Own Engine

I know most people starting off use game development tools and prefabricated engines, but I can't do that. I'm the kind of guy who likes to do HTML work with a simple notepad program; not one of those programs with a bunch of "features." The thing is, I have to know how to build my own game engine. I would love to learn any way I can. Does anyone know where I can find a comprehensive online tutorial or an engine that I can study? I tried studying the Torque engine, but it had DLL files and I don't think you can decompile those. Thanks in advance.

The Code on the Cob series and Superpig's Enginuity series are a couple sets of articles that should be useful to you (though neither is complete - yet) found here
There are not many resources telling you how to put all the parts of an engine together, but once you figure that part out, there are tons of details on each individual element of the engine. Determining how to get it all working together is the hard part I think. There are lots of other articles on GameDev that might be good too. I like the Game Programming Genesis ones also (same link above).

Thank you very very much. I want to go into game development and I have some projects I want to work on, but, I'm humiliated to say that my knowledge in game development only goes as far as mods, patches, terrain building and simple scripting. I've been trying to find more on this, but Google isn't much help.

Existing open source engines available from SourceForge (sourgeforge.net):
Ogre, Cube (anyone want to add more?)

You could also take a look at the Quake / Quake 2 source codes available from http://www.idsoftware.com/business/techdownloads
Though they are not that easy to read for many people (from what I've heard from the GD.NET forums), they are actually quite interesting.
Well, at least I found them very interesting ;-)

Wow. Their license is a little more generous than usual.

Thanks everyone. This stuff is going to be a great help.

Just one more thing. I know I've asked for enough already, but I just have one more problem.

I downloaded some source code from the ID Software site that nife gave me the link to, and it was right when I opened the folder that I realized something... I don't know how to compile it.

:D

Is there some special file I'm supposed to open in the C++ compiler or is it a combination of files or what?

You need to click on the workspace file. I think that's a winQuake if I'm not mistaken, built with vc6 and masm. You can skip the masm step and even compile the code if you don't have a retail version of Quake and then use QuakeArmyKnife with some hacking of Quake texture files to build your levels in that editor. You might even build the code with non-vc6 compiler but am not sure if this is possible. You will need the win32 libs for sure but not sure about compiling quake resource files if any. Theoretically you could hack the code to make it work but that code is one bad monkey. You remove one section of code and have to follow the logic of the function calls to figure out what else needs to be removed and it's just a mess. The state vars are all over the place. This is pretty much code by the seat of your pants and don't ever look back type of codebase.

O_O

Sooooooo basically, I need a... vc6 compiler or something?

The easiest way to do it is with masm, vc6 and retail version of quake. Anything else is lots of hacks.

well just to coment on the toqrue thing, if you but the indie licience for 100 dollars you can thenn get the full source code.

Well, I've had no luck so far.

I'm just going to continue studying until I figure this out. I have like 30 pages of notes written up on C++. But thank you very much for your help, everyone. I'm sure these resources have brought me several steps closer to my goal. Thanks.
