I'm looking for a good, free first person shooter that involves more than just blowing up everything on the screen. I'm not too picky, though. Any suggestions?

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is free, you could give that a try.
I've never tried it, but I've heard America's Army's alright, you could also try that.

The two the others stated above are your best bets: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (which I think is alright) and America's Army (haven't actually played it, yet).

On top of that, FilePlanet has a bunch of demos you can play on GameSpy Arcade. Go here for the files.

Also, DOOM and Quake and some others are now open-sourced.. if you can find the source (fairly easy) and compile it (pretty difficult, I managed to get nothing but errors when I tried..) you could play those.

GameHippo I think has some FPS's as well (and all the games on GH are freeware, so the "free" part is covered).

openquartz (like quake, only multiplayer/botmatch)
freedoom (free data for doom engine)
legends (like tribes 2, only multiplayer)
cube (alot like quake, runs good even w/o 3d card, multiplayer level editing)

I know all these because they run on linux :)

could you post a link for legends. That returns many results, even if I add more specifiers, like first person shoot and free.

Exactly how bad of a computer will it run on? I couldn't find system requirements with 20 seconds of searching... the closest thing I saw was on someone else's site.

about minimum: Celeron 366 (Win98), TNT graphics; minimum RAM is said to be 64 MB.

I ask because my laptop could handle that, assuming you don't need ANY 3d graphics.

I'm guessing TNT graphics means at least a TNT/TNT2 level graphics card.

Go for Americas Army. Absolutely freaking great. I'm Fahrenheit451 of course. Honor 49. I play Mountain Pass SE if you drop by.
