Hi All, Two questions: 1. Does anyone know of any PC graphics cards that support detail texture? 2. Does anyone have a sample OpenGL program that does detail texture that I can try running on my PC (I am running Pentium 3, Windows 2000, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro)? Thanks.

Detail texture is just a name for a regular texture that is repeated many times over a larger mesh with another texture under it (multitextures), ie a heightfield mesh.

To try this, just draw a simple quad with texture coords 0.0 and 5.0. This will repeat the texture 5 times over the quad.

EDIT:
...and you must set texture wrap to GL_REPEAT.
glTexParameteri( GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_S, GL_REPEAT );
glTexParameteri( GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_T, GL_REPEAT );

Thanks for your reply, Skanatic.

Multitexturing does not work on my computer. Are there any other alternatives?

I'm pretty sure your graphics card has support for multitextures. Update your graphics card's driver to the latest.

Multitexturing was included in OpenGL 1.5.

You have a radeon 9800? multitexturing is DEFINITELY supported. Oh and for the record multitexturing was promoted to core in 1.5, it came about in 1.2 iirc

hope that helps

When General Patton died after World War 2 he went to the gates of Heaven to talk to St. Peter. The first thing he asked is if there were any Marines in heaven. St. Peter told him no, Marines are too rowdy for heaven. He then asked why Patton wanted to know. Patton told him he was sick of the Marines overshadowing the Army because they did more with less and were all hard-core sons of bitches. St. Peter reassured him there were no Marines so Patton went into Heaven. As he was checking out hi

It's a long story. I did try to download and install the latest driver but got an error "Zero Display Error" while installing it. I posted a message about this a few weeks ago.

I installed the latest driver on another computer (win XP, AMD), and it installed fine.

I ran a multitexturing sample program from the OpenGL Performer API on both computers, and the program claims that my graphics card doesn't support multitexturing, on both computers.

Well... something is wrong. Perhaps it's a hardware error. The 9800 is a pretty modern card and does support OpenGL 1.5. So if you get the same error on both computers perhaps the card is broken. Try it in a third computer. If the problem still prevail you could contact your supplier and ask them.

EDIT:
Can you run the latest games without any problems?

I know that a 9800 supports multi-texuring I had one.

PFNGLMULTITEXCOORD2FARBPROC glMultiTexCoord2fARB = NULL;PFNGLACTIVETEXTUREARBPROC glActiveTextureARB = NULL;PFNGLCLIENTACTIVETEXTUREARBPROC glClientActiveTextureARB = NULL;

you need to setup the correct functions in windows before you can use them even with 1.5 installed you can't just say

glBegin(GL_QUADS);glMultiTexCoord2f(); glVertex3f();//blah blahglEnd();

you need to setup the texture units correclty and setup the functions ahead of time...

There is information on using extensions in the Forum FAQ if you want to do multitexturing on your own. If you're having driver problems, try uninstalling them completely before installing the new ones. If you're still having problems, contact ATI.

Thanks everybody for your feedbacks. I'll look into this more and try the various things you suggested.
