Does anyone know of a tutorial that explans how to roll & pitch up/down like an airplane? I figure I need two vectors.. one for the direction I'm facing, and one up-vector, to handle the roll factor. I couldn't find any tutorials that explain how to implement this, though. -andy

Hi,

It sounds like you don't actually need help with physics at this point, but rather simply rotations? If I'm wrong, AP's reference is a good one. Otherwise, perhaps you could specify, so that we can direct you to references appropriate to understanding and implementing rotations.

Yes, by "physics" i mean basically the mechanics of plane-style rotation. Basically, you can only actually turn the plane up or down.. and rolling the plane just changes the axis on which your up and down movements are applied.. I was having trouble figuring out on my own how to "apply" these rotations to a direction vector (used later for the motion of the plane) and also make the plane tilt right.

so yeah, rotation tutorials (if they can help explain these types of rotations) would be helpful as well. I know the basics of rotation just fine.. rotating & displaying a plane & the right angle & roll is harder than it seems at first :P

To provide useful feedback we'll probably need to know more about what you already know. Do you have any experience with matrices? Euler angles? Quaternions? Based on that info someone can probably point you in the right direction.

Matrices: comfortable with
Euler angles: minimal
Quaternions: minimal

Euler angles! I looked up those things b/c i didn't really know what they were.. well, i decided to look into the wonderful "3d math primer for graphics and game development" book that I have, and the section on euler angles uses an air plane as an example! thanks for turning me on to that (in a way :P)! I think i'm pointed in the right direction...

[edit] meh, the euler angles section didn't really tell me much I didn't know already.. and i've been trying euler angles with not much success so far, so I really need something that explains how to apply it to an air plane orientation system[/edit]
