Saving Textures - Visual Basic 6

Hya, I've written some code that creates light map textures in visual basic 6. Previoulsy I was saving them by rendering them to a picture box and saving the picture box but due to some annoying issues with picture box resizing at run-time and performance I'm looking for a better way of doing it. The only other method I've come up with so far is by creating my own .BMP files. This sounds like it could give me a significant performance boost with a little work but I've got some problems understanding the palettes part. If I create the palettes for the light maps - I would want to use a pretty large palette of course (maximum 255 (r) * 255 (g) * 255 (b) ) - it would probably take ages. How could I create such a large palette quickly? Could I just make a full-size palette file and copy it to all my bitmaps? That'd be a bit of a waste of space wouldn't it? Any ideas you could pass on about creating bitmaps and palettes would be great and any other solutions to saving my data would be really usefull too. My data's just a 2-dimensional array of R,G,B colours at the moment. Thanks for any suggestions you can give Matt
