I've been wanting to learn to play drums for a long time, so the past couple of days I've been doing alot of reading online about the different manufacturers and whatnot, and finally settled on a Gretsch Catalina Birch kit and a Paiste 502 set of cymbals, which I purchased at 4 in the morning last night. For those drummers on these forums, do you guys (gals) look at this as being a pretty decent set to learn on? I should be getting my kit in the mail (or UPS or whatever) next week and plan on getting ahold of a drum teacher as quickly as possibly. I'm entirely a self taught guitarist/bassist and well, I'd like to learn "the right way" on drums. I realize that I'm going to need to get a metronome soon as well. Any particular recommendations on a good metronome to get? I've found a gazallion types of sticks out there. Could anyone explain the differences, like what to look for as far as obtaining particular sounds with different types of stick tips?

No drummers on GameDev.net?

I picked up a pair of nylon tipped Vic Firth 5A sticks and some off brand 5A sticks. I want to see what the differences between sticks that cost 3x the cheap ones and the cheap are.

If used properly, there's not much of a difference (except for the feel maybe).

I use joey jordison sig Ahead titanium alloy sticks, nylon tip and plastic sheath protection. They are weighted just right for very fast drumming i've found.
Your kit is not bad. Paiste are good quality and not a bad price; you should be able to get ALOT of noise out of those- which is what every drummer wants :)
If you want to get into hardcore fast drumming later or want to get more complex patterns then I would suggest you look into getting a _DECENT_ double bass drum peddle- they always sound slick once you get quick on your feet.

I'm self taught drummer. I love the drums toooooo much.

Good luck, and don't forget to piss off the neighbours ;)

I can play a bit, and I have my own kit back home. I never use it.

I just wasted my time and yours by posting this, didn't I?
