JUMP JUMP JUMP!!

Original Post
I found this link through Carlos Leituga (the author of a game development related comic for the Portuguese version of GDnet. Dammit, I can't remember the link now >_<). World jump day!! The plan is to drive the planet into a new orbit by having millions of people all jump at the same time. Apparently they need around 6000,000,000 people to jump, and have 67,993,145 people registered so far. The jump is scheduled to happen on 20 July 2006. I for one welcome our new trajectory as it accidentally shoots us into the sun.
Cool. Good idea, lets all try and run our planet into the sun!
I didn't visit the link or anything, but if everyone jumps at the same time of the day (for example, everyone jumps at 12:00 in their timezone), then it would indeed have an effect. But probably not a lot.
If everyone jumped at 12:00 in their time zone, you'd have a ring of moments of pressure every hour, going around the earth. So if the american west coast jumps earth out of orbit, the middle east is going to jump it back to where it came from 12 hours later.

um...not to be a party pooper or anything, but if everyone jumped at the same time, all over the world, even if it did have some effect, wouldn't all the jumps from different sides of the world cancel each other out and not really do anything?
I was thinking the same thing, so I had a bit of a looksie through the site, and it turns out they are trying to get everyone within just the western hemisphere to do the jump.
So basically everybody on the planet is required to travel to the western hemisphere to jump?
Madness. Madmen, whoever are organising this. Somebody should stop them. And I am that somebody.

Population grows exponentially (granted, I don't know if it will grow fast enough).
Never mind, I really should click the link before asking.

I thought this thread is about jumpjumpjump.
Me too. [grin]
In future news, super man kills 600 million people in an attempt to save the world.

6 billion people? Uhm...
It's 600,000,000, not 6,000,000,000.
i thought 1 billion was 1million, million so 1,000,000,000,000...
also, in schools in the UK they tried this a few years ago, I remember it, did absoloutly nothing!
I remember hearing that in America the numberic system defines 1 billion as less, but not sure how much... I am getting confused (5:49AM UK) time for sleep!

Wouldn't work. Newton tells me so.
Even if they only have the western-hemispherians jump at the same time, anyone who's studied basic mechanics will (ought to) tell you the idea is silly. The amount of energy released while everyone jumps up is almost exactly regained as everybody falls back down again. (The difference is negligible, not to mention the total energy itself.) The only way to really throw the Earth into a new, or out of, orbit would be if somehow half the planet jumped off one side of the earth and into outer space, never to return.
Now that I think about it, there are some people who I'd like to sign up.
Who can tell me what the escape velocity of the Earth at the mean surface height of the western-hemisphere is?
