I've decided to get into a little network programming, and I now know the basics. So now I want to expirement a little by designing a fairly straight foward instant messanger system. Jus simple text messaging, file transfer, etc. What I'd really like to know are some good models to use for the server/client communicaiton scheme, and any pitfalls I should avoid in making something like this. Any help would be super awesome.

Hmm..

Well, I would vow for the Server/Client model myself. You'll need a single server through which all the clients connect. Also if client A wants to talk to client B, then the message that client A sends needs to be sent to the server, and then the server needs to send the message to client B. This is for IP and other such privacy issues. There's not too much to a basic messenger. I have come across quite a few messengers on sourceforge that have huge security flaws in them, so please be careful. :) Anyone else have some recommendations/ideas?

Should be a fun project,

Awesome, thanks GCS584.

I was thinking along the server-client lines, but I wasn't sure if there were any other methods. As for watching for security flaws, consider it done.

Anything else, even more specific, would be nice.
