Hello, I am the leader of the Linux Current Generation Game Development Project, a group devoted to create free 3D open-source games for the Linux OS and other distros. Currently the project is in its infancy, but it has been submitted for registration at SourceForge, and should be done by Monday or Tuesday (if it is accepted). Currently no game/genre as been chosen, but as soon as we gain a number of staff this decision will be made. We are looking for ANYONE. Skinner, Modeller, Coder(C/C++), Web Designer, PR, Graphic Artist. IF anyone is interested please post here or contact me at the following addresses: thetk421-at-gmail.com -or- thetk421-at-users.sourceforge.net Thank you for your interest. [edit] Also this is a serious project, but it is non-profit (to an extent aka hosting ect.) so it will be an enjoyable projec to work on.

Always nice to see another open-source game project. [grin] I can't help you since I have my own Linux open-source game project (also registered on SourceForge [wink]), but I can give you guys some ideas for games I would like to see. Here's a few ideas I have:

1) Have you ever played the KDE game Konquest? I think it is SO much fun, especially for how simple it is. I'd like to see a game expanded on that basic idea. For example, showing the ships in flight when going from one planet to another. Being able to change course of fleets while in movement. More types of ships. Etc etc etc. There's tons of different things you can do with that basic game to make it into a really great and enjoyable game, you just have to find the right combination. [smile]

2) I remember a long time ago I played some 2D MMO space game where you select a ship which has different traits (fast acceleration, fast turning, heavy armor, etc) and you fly around a map collecting power-ups and fighting it out with other ships. It wasn't really complicated, but it was a lot of fun. I'd like to be able to play something like that again.

3) A Starcraft/Command & Conquer-like (RTS) game. The only other one I know of is Freecraft which....well let's face it. It's Warcraft with worse graphics. I want to see a game that is original, and RTS games are my second favorite genre (after RPGs).

Also why do you say you want to make a 3D game? I don't think you should immediately rule out making a 2D game, because they're a lot easier (and hence faster) to make and they are just as much fun IMO. Heck look at Battle for Wesnoth.

Well whatever you end up doing good luck and keep me/us posted! If you want to use some of the code from my game as a starting point I would gladly welcome you to (it's GPL licensed). In particular I am fond of the audio engine (which uses SDL_mixer). It's nothing fancy and it doesn't have anything really advanced, but it does what we need it to and handles audio playing well, so I like it.

Thanks for the input! Currently I would really like to have a 4X space game in the vein of FreeOrion and MoO2 with light 3D support (ala Homeworld 2 possibly, just planets and the like). possibly more of an RTS hybrid allowing you to control your fleet in real time, unit to unit or group to group. Please if anyone has any ideas or wishes to join please email me at thetk421@gmail.com or post here. Thank you.
