Well, after all the protesting, the email writing, the persistant mocking of Fecktallica, Napster have abandoned all their principles and sold out to BMG - a rather large music company(more or less). As someone who went along with the whole thing i feel more than a little p****ed off. Clearly they were just holding out for the payoff. See for yourself: http://www.dealinfo.com/BeCG-Napster/ R.

It''s a consequence of capitalism...

They were gonna cut the best deal they could get... if they could keep napster going, and make money, they think: "Hey, why not!" and presto, with millions(I''m guessing) of users, even if only a few % are willing to pay, it means lots of $''s!

Us iMesh... or GNutella... or something something

Well, it was only a matter of time before programs like napster had to be legitimized. Napster, has preformed it''s job extremly well. It forced the record companies to pay attention to this new media form. Free music was nice, but you can''t honestly expect the artists making the music to give their works away freely. Fortunatly a reasonable agreement has been reached. $4.95 a month for unlimited song downloads is alot cheaper than a $15.00 CD. In my opinion this is what programs like napster were made for, to reduce the price and to let people make their own "CD''S" rather than be reliant on paying $15.00 for a CD in the store with only 1 or 2 good songs on it. This "Selling Out" you speak of is just the cost of becoming legitimized. You can expect that most of the other programs similar to napster will either be shut down or will "sell out" in the next few months. This is where we as software developers have to draw a comparison between illegal software and programs like napster who are not legitimized.

It was nice while it lasted, however it''s time to start treating the artists to a little cash.

The napster battle is still long from over. BMG has not yet dropped the lawsuit, and nor have any of the other companies.

I hope they take this case to the end; it is extremely interesting legally. This case (and similars like DeCSS) really will determine if consumers will have fair use of purchases or not.

Eventually napster will attempt to make money either through deals with music companies or on their own. This is not surprising at all, considering all the money ventures pumped into them (at least $15 million).

Scour is being sued by a list of companies similar to the napster lawsuits. Eventually these services will get their day in court...

No, BMG agreed to withdraw their lawsuit after Napster implements a subscription based system.
