Hey guys, I recently bought the "Isometric Game Programming with DirectX 7.0" and I am having troubles compiling. After opening up the project in VC++.Net, I try to build and I get these errors: IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirect3D7 IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirect3DHALDevice IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirect3DMMXDevice IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirect3DRGBDevice IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirect3DTnLHalDevice IsoHexViewer error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _IID_IDirectDraw7 IsoHexViewer error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _DirectDrawCreateEx@16 referenced in function "struct IDirectDraw7 * __cdecl LPDD_Create(struct HWND__ *,unsigned long)" (?LPDD_Create@@YAPAUIDirectDraw7@@PAUHWND__@@K@Z) IsoHexViewer fatal error LNK1120: 7 unresolved externals What is making it do that? It has to be something with my computer, b/c the source code comes with an executable that works fine. I'm still a newb to all of this, so any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS! --Grey_Havoc

Nope, the exact opposite. If the exe runs, it means that your system is capable of running the program just fine. It's your compiler settings.

You need to link with some libraries, they'er probably mentioned in the book, but I think they're dxguid.lib and ddraw.lib. I'm not sure though, it's been a long time since I used DX7.

Goto the Project menu -> IsoHexViewer properties -> Linker -> Input, and enter "dxguid.lib ddraw.lib" (no quotes) in the Additional Dependencies box, then rebuild.

I can't find where I need to place the linker files. Under properties, I don't have "IsoHex properties" or anything similar to that. I'm using VC++.Net.. is it in a different place?

You want to go to the Project (not properties) menu at the top of the screen and select what should be the last option (IsoHexViewer Properties...). Then follow Evil Steve's directions.

thanks for the quick responses. It seems my project was read-only for some reason.. dunno why.. but I fixed it and now the properties part of the project menu comes up, thanks!

More than likely, you copied it off the CD-ROM. In that case, it was made read only [smile]
