Does anyone know why my windows/msn messenger signs in everytime i log in to my computer? I went into the options and turned off everything i could find but it still does it and i dont want it to.

That's very strange - is it in your Startup folder? (It shouldn't be). Failing that, on the main screen select "Always Sign in as: Appear Offline" (I think that's only in MSN7 though).

EDIT: Stupid question - have you unticked "Allow automatic sign in when connected to the internet" as well as "Run messenger when I sign into Windows"?

Yes I have those unchecked, the funny thing is that the messenger icon does not even show up in the little icon notification bar to the right when it automaticallt starts. The only way i know it is running is when someone messages me, and even then only the conversation window shows up

if it's in windows xp, it's in your user account settings (I think), something to do with associating your account with a .Net passport. It automatically logs in to windows messenger and checks hotmail web accounts.

By options do you mean the Startup Tab in the System Configuration Utility? If not, then you should go there (run -> msconfig) and uncheck msmsgs.exe and it shouldn't start up anymore.

Wait a minute, what is the ASP.NET Machine account that has shown up in my user accounts list??? I could not find anything about the login in my personal account but would this account have something to do with it? For some reason i have not seen it til now.

Ah yes - bear in mind that MSN messenger is not the same thing as Windows messenger.

It's an account created when installing Visual Studio .NET, useful for debugging purposes I believe.

it uses the same .net account and buddy list. I don't mean the netbios messenger, I mean the default instant messenger that comes on windows xp installs (you have to install MSN messenger).

That's exactly what I mean too - I doubt that settings are copied between them. So it looks like he's disabling MSN messenger from starting up, but Windows
messenger is still kicking in.

In Windows Messenger, go to Tools->Preferences and see if the first two boxes are checked or cleared.

Well for now I just set the default login to some random false account so if it ever tries to log in again it should prompt me for a password. I relogged in to windows and it didnt so maybe it'll work for now.
