StarCraft had me for a while. I also like Lords of the Realm 2, even if that's not really an RTS. To be quite honest, I'm really interested in making a turn-based game.
Yup, gonna go for StarCraft.

starcraft? really? that got really boring for me
probably Ground Control, closely followed by Homeworld
I'm going to go with Earth 2150. On a side note, did we not just have a topic very similar to this?

Z, by the Bitmap Brothers is an excellent RTS, and it's a little different from the standard formula. Definately worth checking out if you can find a copy, but it's a pretty old game now.
I don't agree. I didn't like it that much at all, it was so annoying this whole "capture instead of build"-system.
I really enjoyed C&C 1, but if you now look at it, it was very simple. One of the better RTS ever I'd say is Total Annihilation, came out in '97 and the community is still going on making maps and new units almost daily
TA Universe
Planet Annihilation
Simply amazing.
I also enjoyed Tiberian Sun alot. But RA2 had this comical atmosphere that I couldn't stand.

To each his own, I still prefer building things myself as well, but I did find it a refreshing change from the norm, and quite well thought out. A poor start on a particular mission was unfortunately pretty much impossible to recover from though.

I definately agree on that one. There were a few nifty concepts in the game (I liked that infantry vehicle that had a diff. weapon depending on what was in it for example), and hearing a new version of Hellmarch was nice, but the graphical style, and just the way a lot of the missions were layed out (but mostly the graphics) seemed to detract from it a bit. While I can't dispute it was a well made game, it just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the series.
Age of Empires.
Warcraft2 was my first though, and still remains cool.

The one and only...

So, what exactly is the definition of an RTS?
Anyways, I think Caesar III falls into this category, too.
Rise of Nations is good. Warcraft 3 is quite good as well.
Im a Lord Of The Rings freak, so, Battle For Middle Earth. Especially the online play, because, you never know exactly what will happen with your opponent(s).
