Hello, I want to make a little intro-animation telling a bit of my game's story. I considered making the animation in 3DS Max but it's quiet difficult to animate a whole scene... Can you give me hints or tips on how to make such animations for games (which programms, techniques, ...) and how to efficiently implement them? thanks, p.s. i am using opengl.

Try look into this: http://www.circlesoft.org
But then you need to convert to DirectX :)

How is it done in professional games like halflife or max payne? - also with pre-rendered movies (the quality of these is very good; even when switching to high resolutions. so there must be serveral pre-rendered versions of the video...)?

The newer bigname games don't use prerendered video. Half-life 2 and Doom 3 both only used real-time cinematics (other than the splash screens like the id logo). The intro to Quake3 was prerendered, but I don't recall there being any in the original Half-Life. Not sure how Max Payne did the comic sequences between levels (I doubt it was prerendered), but I don't recall it having anything prerendered either.

You do not have to have multiple versions of a video to display it in different resolutions. It is usually either scaled up or down to fill the screen.

Also the professional prerendered videos are probably mostly done in 3DSMAX or something similar.

If your game is 3D, I would go with a realtime cinematic using actual game models. If its 2D and you want a 3D intro, go with a video wether it's from 3DSMAX or maybe even "hand drawn" animation.
