Good-looking: average pop- or movie star, universally accepted to be drooled on. Beautiful: hard to define exactly. You can fall in love with a person who is beautiful, but not with someone who is merely good-looking. Beautiful people (and I''m not referring to Marilyn Manson''s song ) are not necessarily good-looking. As I said, hard to define. This is just something I thought about, because I don''t find most of the stupid movie stars that people are admiring attractive at all, even though I must agree they are good-looking. -Jussi

Beautiful is a combination of the persons nature, their character, their persona as it were, and how it interacts with you. Facial features don''t even come into the equation - though they can be an added bonus

The beauty of a person shows through in their actions towards you and towards others. It is not a physical thing, it is not tangible in that you cannot touch it or clearly define it... It is much like an RPG[-like] in many ways

I agree it's strongly based on character, but not entirely. Every day I see people more attractive (to me) than "the average pop star", even though I don't know them. And I don't think I would find someone looking like the contents of a garbage bin attractive regardless of her character, although she might be a good friend.

I think that each person has their own opinions on what they find attractive about people (attractive, not beautiful ). So, a garbage bin to you might be a princess to another. That is why beauty cannot be determined by looks

Yes, that is of course true. Hmpf. But still, I''m always right.

I guess I''d have to say natural beauty...A kind of beauty that really comes out at you...

Speaking of natural, that''s another flaw in "the average popstar": they are overly made-up. I think that''s disgusting.

LMAO, Anonymous Poster, indeed Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. The first time I read this, I thought it was an AD&D joke, myself (not being english native). But anyway, as usual the sayings are very true. Beauty is one of those things that is a purely and entirely subjective notion, that is, it's totally dependant on the person talking about it. I find some S&M art photograph beautiful (don't remember the name of the artist), while some will find them "sick". I will look at pictures on rotten.com with a medical eye (my father used to bring his medicine books at home when he was a student), while some will find them funny, and other will just throw up while looking at them.

Selkrank : you didnt define beauty. I dont think beauty has really to do with the appearance. Because as I just wrote, the same thing will be perceived differently by different people.
The only definition I can come up with would be something like :

Beauty : attribute given by an observer to an object, used to indicate a feeling of admiration/appreciation towards the object, usually due to underlying notions associated with the object, rather than the actual appearance.
e.g. some people will find fat women beautiful because they associate a notion of prosperity (or other notion that is perceived as positive), while some will find that repulsive because they associate a negative notion to it (laziness ?)

There you go ... verbose enough, isnt it ?
Using this, "good-looking" becomes a specific case of "beautiful" where the underlying notion is sexual attraction. Someone beautiful can be good-looking as well. But for instance, a painting can be beautiful, and this has nothing to do with sex.
A pop star is good-looking, attractive, because of the sexual fantasm associated with him/her.

Johnnyquest : partially true. Basically, you say than some girl is beautiful when you want to imply that your feelings are not merely due to sexual attraction. In the case you describe, it's because you associate love with someone. She become more than a good looking girl...

arsenius : yeah, I dont find britney spears all that beautiful, because I associate some negative notions to her. And that's quite a turn off.

youpla :-P

beauty really doesnt exist to anyone but one''s self. there is no definition as everyone perceives things differently.

well, since everybody''s being so deep and philosophical about this, I''ll give a shallow answer.

My definition of beauty:
I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

People actually did a study on this subject. They studied certian stars that were "beautiful" to most people. They found out that it had something to do with the position of certian organs (like the eyes) and shape of the body. They actually defined a skeleton in the computer. Don''t ask for a link because I saw it on TV a few years back.

I heard somewhere that attractiveness is based on the person''s symmetry. The more symmetric their face is the more attractive your mind percieves them to be.

That scientific article on physical beauty (beauty based soley on the appearance) I can remember a bit about. What they did was get a heap of pictures, and showed them to lots of people and got them to rate them, then they did something fancy to work out what made people physically attractive (note that this is only for the face):
They had more symmetry than others
They have high cheek bones
They have a smallish (not wide) mouth
Large eyes
Thin chin
There were a few more, but I can''t remember it (I think I read about it in one of Karl Kruzelniki''s books (if you are in Oz, then buy them from ABC stores, I''m not sure about overseas. But they are really cool books =))

So imagine an equilateral triangle pointing down and you''ve got the perfect face =)

I find it hard to DEFINE beauty because it covers such a wide range of things:
Physical Beauty:Anything that appeals mainly to the senses.

Emotional Beauty:Love itself...

Situational Beauty:Film,literature,etc...

There are so many things in life that can be considered beautiful...and they change from person to person.A short list of what i find beautiful.

Physically:The curves of a human body.

Emotionally:The act of embracing someone.

Situationally:The end of Alien3 or the final episode of Babylon 5
