USB cable question...

I am curious about something...Can any usb cable work with any usb device? My digital camera's cable has a little cylinder on it (not exactly sure what it is, but it is a small cylinder on the cable) and others do not. Would it damage the camera to stick any usb cable into it?

I don't recommend it, the cylinder probably has some circuits in it to adapt the signals for specific devices. Usually they have rather unique jacks at the ends (not the computer one) so they don't fit across different devices which can cause problems.

Most likely the cylinder contains a toroid or something as a noise reduction device. I'd say that if the cable fits, it should be wired the same way. Most of my devices have the same USB connection end on them and I mix and match cables without any problems.
