StarLock -- http://www.starlock.com/ Massively multiplayer browser-based sci-fi RPG/adventure. Unfinished, but in development for 6 years and playable now. Probably the most ambitious browser-based game ever created (especially as a one-man project). Free game. Check the TOS before getting started. Ten-minute single-player intro quest makes sure players don't pile up at the beginning begging for help from other newbies.
