Hey, I'm having a bit of trouble with my OpenSSL implementation. I'm developing a simple client that has a shared key on the server and the client is supposed to download the key and use it. Anyone here have any experience with OpenSSL or does anyone here know where any good newsgroups/forums/message boards for OpenSSL are? Also, does anyone here have any existing source for a good OpenSSL client? Thanks -NippBit

I'd probably suggest looking at a very simple app - for example, the s_client program which ships with openssl.

This is effectively like "netcat" or perhaps "telnet" (without telnet negotiation ability), only it connects to a SSL socket rather than a plain tcp one. You can use it to test HTTPS servers by speaking HTTP into s_client and having it do the SSL handshake and encryption / decryption.

Alternatively,

- lynx
- curl

Both of which can (optionally, presumably) use OpenSSL for HTTPS support.

Thanks mark,

I found the error actually. It was simple, but since OpenSSL lacks documentation it was still rather difficult to track down. I had a self issued certificate and the verify routine was choking on it.

I say we get a bunch of college students together and have them sit down and write a decent doc on OpenSSL. There is so much in there, but yet so very little of it is exposed through the current documentation!
