I guys, I want return to school to become a 3D game modeler, and I need some informations on the jod market. I have called every company, and I can't get any answer from them :( Please Feel free to answer any of my questions if you are working in this domain. 1. What is your title of your position? 2. how long have you worked in this position? 3. What are the duties and responsibility of this position? 4. Did you receive on-the-jod training when you started? 5. Did you attend training to become skilled in this position? 6. If you had the opportunity to start your career again, would you do anything differently? 7. Are there opportunities for advancementin your jod? 8. what is the current starting wage for your job? 9. Are uniforms or other special clothing ithems or tools required for this position? - if yes, what is required? 10. What are the working conditions of your position? ex. noisy, shift work... 11. What do you enjoy the most about your jod? 12. What do you enjoy the least about your job? 13. Can you recommend book or other types of resources that I can study about your position and industry? 14. any other comments? I know it is annoying but this is my last chance to fill my application. sorry and thx :)
Whats a jod?
Below is NOT ME, but a tipical example of an artist

1. 3dartist
2. any amount of years
3. Making 3d models, texturing models, making textures, exporting assets. do what the lead artist tells me
4. Training on the job often happens normally informally, everyone learns something as they go, including experienced guys. If you not sure ask someone,
most people are glad to help. Each project varies in what method you must use.
5. Mostly likely self taught, some people do courses in computer games or a related subject. Some people come from art school or demo scene or hobby is
making graphics.
6. Go into an different industry :)
7. Yes, if you want more money if you good and managment if you that way inclined
8. Poor to great, see gameasutra's survey of pay.
9. Jeans and T-shirt
10. computers can be annoying noisy, but there are regulations and vdu laws.
11. seeing your work in game, seeing the box on the shelf
12. not seeing your work in game, not seeing the box on shelf, other people messing stuff up inc. marketing/publishers, "the crunch"
13. the internet, MODDING is a great way to start. - get your hands dirty
you learn fast by doing.
14.good luck

thank you alot Mikiex
1. Graphics Engineer
2. 7 years
3. Creation of all 2D/3D art assets and C++/OpenGL code that displays them to the screen. i.e. I'm the artist and programmer.
4. No, strictly sink or swim.
5. No, I'm a Molecular Biologist by educations, programmer by hobby, but fell into this job, and I can't match my current pay in Biology unless I had a PhD.
6. I would work somewhere else, NOT a startup.
7. No.
8. Start ~$40K. I make considerably more than that now, but that is what I started at.
9. No, casual dress.
10. Unrealistic deadlines, dated or NO tools to use. Work is underappreciated by NON technical idiots that run the show.
11.There is no enjoyment anymore.
12.Every minute detail of my day to day work is a GRIND, mentally and physically.
13. Lots of good books, look at the FAQ in the forum of your interest.
14. Stay in school as long as you can, stave off "growing up" as long as possible. Work somewhere where you can gain something from it, knowledge and money. Your time as a viable rank and file artist or programmer is LIMITED, probably till about age 35-40. By then if you are not in management, you are too expensive and OLD to hire. Make all of your time count for something constructive professionally.
