There seems to be a few posts from time to time that asks: "which X game is better in some Y category". Though some are annoying, others are actually quite informative. This, for instance, http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=310946 , is one such thread. So I'm wondering if we can have optional polls with our posts, some time in the future. Obviously not pressing but it would be fun to have.

In the meantime you could submit a poll for the main site and then PM me with the thread URL and I can link the poll question to the thread.

I made up a PHP poll system a while back, Coldacid used it to host an offsite poll from GameDev.

Don't hold your breath on this particular feature. We decided a while back that this wasn't something we don't want to implement. I don't really remember what the reasoning was, but when weighing the benefits of that feature we came to the conclusion that it just wasn't worth it.

Personally, I think discussions of what specifically makes them better are more productive - making a poll would make people more likely to simply vote and leave, rather than posting in indepth response on why a certain game is better, and what the pros and cons of techniques used are.

I've seen the ability to post polls destroy forums. Please don't do that to GDNet [oh].

Two particular scenarios jump out:

- You get anyone/everyone posting a poll ("do you agree that this is the way to do ___?? yes/no"), and a lot of them are genuinely pointless...

- People end up getting irate that certain things are included/excluded from possible options ("What, ___ shouldn't be there! it's c***").

I suppose both those can be sorted out by strict moderation, but I still don't like it [smile].

Jack makes some good points, but my main argument against it is that these are discussion forums, and on every forum that I've seen polls implemented, there really is no significant discussion associated with them.

FWIW, with sufficient depth and array of issues for polling, it's amazingly valuable market research for one thing in terms of consumer behavior. I mean that in the context that the members of the community are consuming site content types as value, and the profiling will lead to better targeting of new product launches (products as in new services). That being said, you now know why I love to write fiction. Much less analysis, but concurrent reduction in chance to ROI, heh..
