Remember the Missingno glitch from the origional pokemon? Here is a short explanation of the programming mistake that made this glitch possible. I believe there is a more detailed explanation about it somewhere...

Meh, just thought it was interesting how that works out. Here is a more detailed page about it. It was at the bottom of the page, don't know how I missed it.

Wow, I remember that glitch; that and the pokemon trading glitch. No one in my neighbourhood could beat me because I messed up my blue version to have 6 lvl 100 mews with different elements on my red. haha

Hmm, unallocated memory on an array. Makes sense. I've been bagged by that one quite a few times.

Pokemon is actually a pretty good game if you get past all the Pokemon merchandise and all that other crap. The various viruses such as Missingno were very fascinating to play with. This is sort of cool since I was just thinking about how the virus was made.

Did anyone else notice that if you focus all your attention on one pokemon that pokemon will become so powerful that you could eradicate any opponent? Bosses would fall in a matter of seconds.

Virus?
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

Pokemon is actually a pretty good game if you get past all the Pokemon merchandise and all that other crap. I (Mushu) lived in hiroshima for a couple of weeks in 1945. It wasn't all that bad if you ignored all the radiation. Oh, and the fish tasted funnay. The various viruses such as Missingno were very fascinating to play with. This is sort of cool since I was just thinking about how the virus could have come about today it would pwn all the pokemon in the world because it evolves into kangaskhan which is like a giant stuffed animal bought off the black market in former soviet satellite state Kazakstan.

Did anyone else notice that if you focus all your attention on one pokemon that pokemon will become so powerful that you could eradicate any playerassuming they didn't have the opposite element that would uber pwn you and you'd be unable to severly damage (wow, so many memories of me getting pwned over and over again ;_;? Bosses wwould fall in a matter of seconds.

...

I went O_o so many times as I was reading your post, I'm not even going to say anything. D'oh!

EDIT: rawr.
EDIT2: I'm going to BSOD myself to repent for this post. brb in the 20 minutes I'll take me to reboot this hunkofjunk which, suprisingly, performs rather well once you get past all the errors and stuff.

GBA MEMORY SPACE a b A[w]B[F][x]C[F][y]D[F][z]E[9][F]F[F][F]G[r][F]H[s][F]I[t][F]J[F]K[v][F]

Let's say that this represents memory available to the game. Each slot can store something. at aE, we find '9'. That could be the character's level. When the game needs to display the character's level it looks in memory address aE. The character's name, BOB, is stored ad memory address aA, represented here with B. Let's say r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z are different pokemon types. F just represents a full memory address

When you play as the old man, the game needs to display his name instead of BOB. The computer replaces the name at memory address aA to old man, shown here with an M. Thing is, the GBA can't just go and forget your character's name. It needs to store it for later. However, all the memory is full. A work around was to store the character's name in the memory used by some of the pokemon. This should be ok because these areas in memory should re-fill with pokemon data when the player enters a new area after this.
GBA MEMORY SPACE a b A[M][w]B[F] <--- We got rid of pokemon 'x' for now, replaced it with BOB.C[F][y]D[F][z]E[9][F]F[F][F]G[r][F]H[s][F]I[t][F]J[F]K[v][F]

Well the problem is that one section of land where the pokemon data DOESN'T refresh in memory if you stay on it. Thus, when chance has it that the pokemon stored in memory address bB is called to fight, the data there is not pokemon x, it's BOB. The code does what it can to interpret the data there as a pokemon (in a sense trying to turn BOB into a pokemon). Thus, different names = different results :)
