A feature I've seen a lot on other forums that I think would be useful for GDNet is where when you're browsing through the forum topics, you can leave the mouse over the title of the post and it will pop up a little box that has the first sentence or so of the post. Its a pretty cool thing that I've come to rely on so I can tell which posts are crap without bothering to open them, and also so I don't miss good threads just becasue the title doesn't really catch my attention. I noticed that the recent threads on the front page do something like this, but to my dissapointment I found that the box only contains the title of the post, not the actual content.

What if a post is really good, but is poorly titled and has a first sentence that is somewhat meaningless (they are often things like "Hi, I'm back with another question..."

I think this would encourage users not to look at what could potentially be very interesting topics, and would also make the pages load slower would it not?

Personally, I'm against it.

I really wouldn't like to see all the giant pop-up alt-texts that would result from that when I just want to move my mouse down the page. You could implement a google style return, but this would just take up a ton of space.

Plus, I enjoy the art of titling threads so people will read them [grin].

Well, theres a short delay before they show up (you have to keep the mouse over the link for a second or so), so thats never a problem.

It happens, but in my experience it usually shows enough to give you a good idea of what its about.

Actually it has the opposite effect, it helps find potentially interesting topics easier. Also, I've never noticed a slowdown from forums with this feature (although to be honest, my internet is quite fast, so something like that shouldn't slow it down anyway)

I think this could be an interesting idea. The more I look through google, and the way other people use google-style searches, this could be quite useful. One line of small text could do it. I suppose it could be an option in the control panel, too.
