i finally got the cpu fan today, and the put parts together (minimal cpu, cpu fan, dimm ram, motherboard, power supply, case+speaker , geforce mx graphics card and i put in a network card for good measure). so I switch it on, power supply fan works, cpu fan works, a little light comes on, on the motherboard. no beep from the speaker (broken?), and nothing on the monitor. I don't think it's the graphics card (took it out another computer before putting in this one), neither the ram (shouldn't it at least boot?) and i don't think the network card's doing any harm either. that leaves the cpu and the motherboard. am i right? what could be wrong? First:
Make sure that the speaker is plugged in to the correct pins.
Second:
Unplug all disks AND unnecessary cards (sound, ethernet) from the board like said before. Leave the display adapter.
Turn it on.
If nothing happens:
Unplug the display adapter.
Turn it on.
If you hear two short beeps then a long beep then there could be a problem with the video card you're trying to use. Try using a different video card. I have a soyo that claims to operate at 8x, but doesn't supply the correct voltage at 8x. I have to operate it at 4x.
If it still doesn't work:
Put the display adapter back in.
Remove all memory from the computer.
Turn it on.
You should here a series of short beeps. If this is the case then your memory could be bad OR it could be out of spec for the board.
If none of this works:
You could have a bad processor or a bad motherboard. Make sure that any jumpers on the board are set correctly for the processor, although most mobos are soft jumpered these days. Also make sure that the CMOS reset jumper isn't set.
Try the processor in a different computer.

Did you connect all needed power cables to the motherboard? RAM inserted properly? All cards inserted properly? CPU correctly installed? What hardware are we talking about?
Double and triple check all those little case hookups. They can get confusing to wire up and can cause some odd problems, including not booting.
Then do what said before and disconnect anything that isn't required to boot. Once you get it started then add all the other stuff.
I doubt your speaker is busted. Unless a wire is torn off or the suface is torn there isn't much to go wrong with a speaker.

you say about jumper switches? the CLK_RATIO's are all set to OFF position and CLK_SW set to ON (auto?).
the speaker is not making any sound at all, so im going to go and get a new one to help with diagnostic.
the cpu fan is on back to front (i.e side with power cable is opposite side to power plug - i haven't switched it round because its very hard to get off, and i didn't realise at first).
also when i switch it on cpu fan comes on, and so does ram led. there is no speaker sound and no vga output. and when i try to switch it back off, using power button nothing happens.
all thats in there is...
im using a Geforce Socket A Pro2 motherboard.

sing it with me! b i o s YEAH. b i o s YEAH. ROFL. you check all of your bios settings? i.e. your settings for hardware, and how it boots and such?

He can't check the bios because it doesn't start. He could reset the CMOS, but because he's never gotten it to start I doubt that would be effective. The settings are likely already set to default.
So -- To be sure, why don't you reset the CMOS and see what happens?

Is your ATX 12V plugged in? Its the square looking plug. Seems obvious, but a friend and I overlooked that and it caused us much puzzlement.
Just what I wanted to say, as you haven't marked it in your pic.
ok, so i tried the ram in every single slot. still same (cpu fan on, power supply fan on and ram led light on). i reset the cmos by taking the battery out. still same.
finally i came to the conclusion i must have a dud speaker. so i got another working speaker from another computer and tried that. no beep. i also tried my speaker in the other computer (which it worked).
I then proceded to take out the graphics card. still no beep. then i took out the stick of ram. no beeping!
as for the atx cable, I don't see how the cpu fan and ram led would come on if it wasn't plugged in (although it hasn't gone all the way down, the clip is letting it go as far down as it can go).
I don't think it'd matter if the fan was back to front (I've done this in the past and it was ok?), and just to recap it doesn't let me turn it back off once i turn it on (yank out power cable - not a good sign).
so with just cpu and ram, there is no beeping. am i current in thinking it should beep if there's something wrong with the cpu?

The LEDs and fans came on when we forgot the ATX 12V, which was why it was confusing. Edit: Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, I mean the square socket in the top right of your diagram.
It would be better if there was a picture of whats underneath the PSU as well.

The game programming book in the background is a nice touch!
Seriously... It sounds like you've got a bum part. If all of your settings are correct and still no response from POST (no beeps) then there is a serious problem. Try the CPU in another computer and try a different CPU in this motherboard. If either one works, then the other may be faulty. I hope you can still get an RMA.
