Hi there, Quick thing... being part of the furniture round here these days, I know all about the retired thread thing (good idea imo), but its not the most obvious thing. Would it be too difficult to change the
button at the bottom of each page to something else? e.g. a non-clickable one with a tombstone/grave instead of the "i" symbol?? Like you already do for closed topics. Minor thing I suppose, but I've been caught out a couple of times when people cross-reference old threads in new ones ("This topic was discussed ____, you might want to read it.") - not immediately obvious anywhere that it's a thread thats old enough to be retired. So you read the cross-referenced thread, have something to say, click "reply" and it dumps you back to the forum listing [oh] Cheers, Jack

Man, that threw me off for a long time when the new forums came out. I tried to click reply, and it jumped me to the main forum page... Didn't get what was going on at first. So yeah, I agree [grin].

I'm pretty sure this was posted a long time ago but nothing was done about it. I hope it's actually implemented this time. If somebody links to a retired thread it's impossible to tell it's retired and going to the forum listing really throws you off.

Cheers Avatar [smile] - least it weren't just me.

Even if it were too difficult to boolean-switch the image/link that was generated, a polite notice that

is a lot more gracious than just redirecting back to the forum listing.

In all honesty, if I weren't familiar with the way of life on these forums, I'd have to assume that the redirect-to-listing thing was a bug rather than a feature.

On that note, I'm gonna grab a beer. Might be late, but I don't sleep well these days [sad]

Cheers,
Jack

I like it Ra - thats the sort of thing I'd like to see. (++rating)

if( still_active )    {        <img src="http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/themes/theme1/reply.gif">    }else if( thread_closed )    {        <img src="http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/themes/theme1/closed.gif">    }else if( thread_retired )    {        <img src="http://tinypic.com/2ldhn9">    }

Obviously, where you click on the 'retired' icon there is no link under it (or, if you really wanted to go for user friendliness - explain why!) same as there isn't a link under a "closed" link.

I agree, it'd be just that little bit more user friendly, and would deal with the occasional 'bug report' of new users attempting to reply to retired threads.

And while we're on a fairly related topic, I'd just like to once again comment that perhaps sticky threads shouldn't be retired automatically like the others? (Most recently suggested here).

And once again, I'll agree that sticky's probably shouldn't be retired.
