Hello, I have been working a part time job for the past four years fixing computers and building computers. But this summer I want to move on. I no longer want to work for my boss and only bring home $50 a day, while I make him over $400+. So what I am planning on doing is making house calls for people. My question is what is a good rate for this and how would I get started? Thanks for all your help, John Kull

Well first you might want to see what the service would normally cost in your area. Call all the stores that offer a similar service ask them what their rate is then charge less than them that is a good start.

btw: I am a little drunk right now but trust me on this it is always good to know your competition.

Try not to oversaturate the market. In my little town, there is 1 computer shop, and that is all the more it needs. If I were to startup a computer repair business here, that would just be stupid. I would cause unnecessary friction with the people in the community, and would probably be driven out of business after just a little while.

On the other hand, If I went head to head with the ITS deptartment at my college for student computer repairs, I would be freaking rich. There is some stuff that ITS just can't do, such as work on expired waranty machines, or ones that aren't dells or macs, the also refuse to do wipes for non school computers unless they are done through the business department. Best part is, the IT department would benifit from me opening my own shop, because it would curb the traffic that often overwhelms them.

Whatever you do, just make sure that you have lots of papers for people to sign, and keep good records of the repairs you do.

Good luck with this.

Thanks a alot. But I have one more question. You said to make sure I have a lot of papers for them to sign. What will they be signing for? Sorry for asking all these stupid questions but I really want to get this started as fast as possible.

They'll probably be signing waiver crap like "You cannot sue the hell out of me if your computer spontaneously combusts due to too much spyware".

Talk to an attorney, they'll probably be able to draft you up a service contract that will cover your ass.

Make very, very sure you want to do this. It may sound like the ideal job now, but consider that you're very likely to start getting calls at 5 AM from your next door neighbor's grandmother wanting to know which little plastic thing to push to make the little white arrow move. Getting into PC repair is literally inviting the entire population, many of whom are not very bright in the ways of things computery, to ask you inane questions at the absolute worst possible times, for the rest of your life.

Just remember - if you help someone once, they will permanently associate you with fixing computer problems, and no matter how hard you try to make them go away, they will insist on getting help from you until you shrivel up and die (either from age or from being inundated with dumb questions). Oh, and if they are in any way related to you, or consider themself your friend in any way, or are friends with someone who is related to you, etc., they will want you to do everything for them for free. Twice a week.

Anyways, I'm just being highly cynical, but be aware of what you're getting into - doing it for someone else and doing it for yourself can be worlds different. If you can tough it out and be successful with it, more power to you - you're a far more patient man than I.
