What do you think the best controller design ever made is/was? Personally I think the N64 controller was the best, it just felt right.

[EDIT] I like my PC controller too:

I'm actually fond of the N64, or the Game Cube controller. I've felt most others are very uncomfortable, especially the X-Box controller.

But then again, older consoles which I like playing are no better so it doesn’t matter much to me.

I'd have to say the dreamcast controler. It only lacked a second analog stick. The trigger buttons were nice and springy.

Probably if you took the SNES controller and gave it analog.

...oh wait that'd be a dual shock.

I also really liked the N64 controller, it's nice having 6 buttons on the right, as well as trigger buttons.

But in the end I have to say the Dual Shock 2 is the best controller so far.

I'll second the Playstation controller.

That said, I think Nintendo has a long history of improving controller design. I may be a little off, but as I see it, it goes a bit like this:

NES: First D-pad
SNES: First shoulder buttons
N64: First analog control stick
Gamecube: ...?

Admittedly, I do really like the gamecube controller, it just feels right to me for some reason. I disagree with the N64 though. I remember one time when I rented Pod Racer on that it made my thumb so sore I couldn't really use it for a day or two afterward.

All told though, the PS and the PS2 both do very well with the same controller, and I think that's the best compliment a controller could have. It didn't need redesigning for a new generation.

NES: First controller with corners that cut into your hands while playing
SNES: I liked that one.
N64: First controller that used the analog stick and a popular game to damage the skin in the center of your palm.
GCN: First controller with an A button so huge, even a retard without fingers can press it.

They're a little different, all the Dual Shock 2's buttons are analog, which was a really cool idea.

I also like the gamecube controller. there are too many damn buttons on the PS2 controller and the XBox controller is just BIG and the buttons all feel the same so you never know what one you are hitting, so you have to look down at the controller to remind yourself.

For some reason I also feel a flame war starting...

PS2 Dual Shock

NOTHING is better. <- (Period)

I even have a converter for dual shock->usb because no computer controller comes close.

The controller fits in your hand perfectly, the buttons are in the right place, the analog sticks are just right, & four triggers are great.

My next favorite controller would be the microsoft sidewinder (the old one, that you could hook 4 of em together in a chain. Not that the USB is any different, except the old one was a cool idea)

Yes, I also like the PS controllers, but I have to say me least favorite is the XBox, because of the size. I hope no flasme war starts, they're just controllers.

Dreamcast. The only problem with the DC is some FPS controls take getting used to.

Is it just me, or does anyone think the cord coming out of the controller facing you is weird?

PS controllers suck, they're too tiny. I suppose if you're a midget, they may be OK. The N64 was a good start, but not quite there. Dreamcast and X-Box (s) are absolutely dreams.

9 times out of 10, if I'm playing PS2 for more than an hour or so I quit due to discomfort rather than getting tired of playing. The same can not be said about DC or XBox games.

Add in pull away cords, and we have a clear victor.

*edit: Note, I am refering to official controllers. Third party controllers that make dual shocks look like x-box controllers don't count.

converter for those who were wondering. I've been meaning to pick one up, but I guess I just don't much PC gaming that requires one.

Hmm, I don't quite remember. The whole dualshock->usb thing is a shady business... it was something like this i think:

Though, I don't think that's where I bought it.

It works well though, force feedback works perfectly and stuff.
