I'll keep it short here.
  1. I'm running a Athlon64 on a nForce3 based motherboard.
  2. I have three identical crucial pc-3200 512MB dimms.
  3. If I have 2-3 in, linux hard locks within seconds, and xp occasionally restarts.
  4. If I have one in, its stable as a rock.
  5. I ran memtest86 several times and it reports a only couple errors after about a dozen passes.
  6. I'm fairly confident that nothing is overheating.
  7. I'm fairly confident that it not a power issue.
  8. I played around a little with the timings, but doesn't seem to help.
So, any ideas of what I could try before I buy a new motherboard?

I assume you have tried all possible combinations of 1, 2 and 3 dimms. I also assume that with *any* 1 dimm it works and with *any* 2 or 3 dimms it fails. I think the only conclusion can be that the memory bank slot 2 or 3 on the mobo is broken. You can in a similar way find out which one causes trouble. On the other hand, check your motherboard specifications and also bios specifications if the amount of memory is supported, and if all banks can be used at once (sometimes only certain combinations are ok).

Thanks for the response.

I'm pretty sure the 2nd memory bank is bad. I get the same symptoms with just one stick in 2. I have terrible luck. When I bought this motherboard it had bad memory banks (it wouldn't even boot). I got it replaced, and now this one sucks too. Chaintech has screwed me, Epox: here I come.

Owch you got screwed by Chaintech? That sucks. They have some nice boards. Which board do you have?

Be VERY sure about Dual channel. I'm just throwing this out there, because I'm too tired to look up the exact specs of your board, but I was getting hard locks and reboots on windows xp and linux too, when I had my 1GB corsair in dual channel mode on my DFI LanParty whatever. Anyway I updated the BIOS drivers and now they work. It could explain how your memory is working with 1, not with 2..

But if you put all three in, it should turn off Dual Channel, so hm. Hope it helps.
