Does anyone know how to mount a hard drive in the knoppix(a linux live distro) so that I can access the actual hard drive and modify it? I've done it before, but I can't remember how. -Jake

create the mount point:

mkdir /mnt/hd

mount:

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hd

Are you using ntfs?

Man page for mount.

It kind of depends what harddrive and what filesystem for the exact command.

You should mount it in fstab, so that it is mounted each time you restart the computer.

But if its a live-cd you can't modify fstab, can you?

I should say that I am very incompetent with linux right now. I messed around with it for like a week then college started and it's been awhile since I last used it(end of last summer) so I can't remember what little I did learn. I did remember how to man the mount thing, thats the first thing I did. But it confuses me right now because I can't remember the basic fuctionality of linux. Not even sure what ntfs is, sorry. I thought it would just come back to me from just messing with the program, but I was wrong. Sorry I posted this thread; I don't even think I know enought to use your replies, but thanks anyways.

Linux takes some practice. I am using Linux (intermitently) for about... 7 years now (but not as my main OS). You will need an elephant memory to remember all the things, which files do what, what settings do what, etc.

Anyway, NTFS is a file system used by WinXP (and other versions of Windows NT).

Thats cool. Linux takes a lot of time to become proficient at. (I still don't know how to use chmod)

NTFS is a filesystem. Its the one used by default by windows xp.

The drive you want to mount, what's installed on it now? And is it your only hardrive?

Thanks guy. Well, its the c drive i guess, just a bunch of programs I would like to have access to, and yes only one hard drive. I basically want the live version to work like an installed os(access to anything I want on the hard drive. I attended a LUG once before I moved (the only thing that sucked about moving) and I saw them mount the hard drive and floppy drive without installing the live distro on the system. This gave them access to files that normally you could not use straight off the cd's iso.

But do you have windows installed on that drive? If so, do you have XP, 2000, ME...? I'm just trying to figure out what filesystem its formatted in.

I'll help you then. [grin]

root@l33tnes# chmod permission file

example of me chmodding a file in /home/cody
Quote:

root@l33tness:/home/cody> chmod 777 win98sec.zip

That gave my win98 boot disk zip a read, write, execute permission to everyone that can access the computer(all users + ftp + http);

Yes windows is installed. It's XP.

Another thing is that I know how to select a shell that will automatically log me in as root, but how do you make yourself root if says something like knoppix@ttyp0[knoppix]$ ?

Thanks, but its the numbers that always confuse me. I usually end up launching konqueror as root and changing permissions that way.

Try something like:
mount -r -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

ps: Last time I checked, linux doesn't really support writing to ntfs (well, it sort of does, but not in a very useful way). So I'm afraid its going to be read only.

Okay I tried it. It says mount: mount point /mnt/windows does not exist
. I have homework that I have to do and then I am going to get some rest. So I will check the thread in the morning, but don't think I don't appreciate everything just because I don't post anymore tonight. Thansk a lot guys.

Oh, yeah. Make the directory: mkdir /mnt/windows
