Today I happened to be watching msnbc in a restaurant, and on one of their "updates on the Pope's funeral every 15 minutes" updates, they reported that "Thongs of people were packed into the streets to see him one last time" Awsome typo.

In Australia, "thong" means something different from in America; this somewhat confused me in international conversations at first.

What does it mean in Australia? I imagine MSNBC was shooting for the word 'throng', although I suppose it is possible they were targetting Australians.

In America it depends on where you live whether or not you call them 'thongs' or 'flip-flops'. I grew up calling them thongs, but everywhere else I hear them being called flip-flops.
