You have to learn the basics before you can move on. As horrible as it sounds, it's true. A house without a good foundation will crumble. You might have heard that game development and programming take a lot of patience, well this is what they were talking about.

Write a game - tetris, pong, asteroids whatever. When your done then anything thats not game specific becomes part of your game engine - things like texture and mesh loaders, sound managers etc.

No one will tell you exactly what you need to write for a game engine because most people can't even agree on what a game engine is! Its like saying "I want to build a house but people keep telling me how to build walls and install toilets" - the plans for a house are different almost every time, and what you include (two bedrooms, a kitchen and a laundry/bathroom or 8 bedroom 4 with on-sweet, dinning room, family room, kids play area etc). You can include whatever you like. Basically anything thats not part of a specific game is part of the engine.

Although the Enginuity series is a good place to start :D

Well, the fist thing of writing an engine is LEARNING THE LANGUAGE.

If you actually know the language (know what double pointers are, references, polymorphism, pointers to functions, virtual base classes) then you can start with the really cool stuff.

Best way of learning how to write a game engine is to look at many other engines out there. Grab a free 2D or 3D game and look at it's engine, or work with a free open source engine and copy them, or roll your own and guess (what i'm somewhat doing and it's successful so far.)

Sure, you can look at Enginuity. By the author's own admission, it is not suitable for a production environment, but it should give you an idea of what's involved.

There is a use to reading the "Hello World" tutorials and deriving something of your own, though.
