I'm, looking to make a 2d RPG, I'm starting small as this is my first project. Are there any tutorials I can use that will help me? I am going to use C++ and the DirectX SDK, I have a book on C++ but it doesn't cover anything but basic syntax (no graphics or anything). I have ordered the book "Programming Role PLaying Games with DirectX", but I need something to work off for now. I am complete noob to this (except for reading the C++ book a while ago) and can't display a bitmap on screen if my life depended on it (well, maybe, but only with lots of time and help documents). I can't really say that I know what I'm doing, but I understand the concepts of it all and will pick it up very fast. Any help would be appreciated (tutorial links especially:P). Thanks.

What C++ book do you have? If it's out of date, you might need a newer one.

That said, if you are not comfortable with C++, avoid your DirectX book.

It would be safe to assume you are going to be programming this in Windows so you might want to try to get a Window on screen. You probably won't need a dedicated "how to" book on Windows programming since most likely that book you have about RPG and DirectX will have a quick primer on it. So, since you were asking for links, heres a good 1,2,3 type deal...

Your first window app.

Get that bitmap loaded.

And then blitting it. (well this articles talks about loading it too.)

You can use the console to make a pretty good 2D RPG. Zahlman released Choose Your Own Adventure which is pretty impressive. Stay away from any graphic programming until you're comfortable with the basics of C++.

Back when I started programming when I was around 10 and ordered a C++ book from England, which I could not read that well back then, I would have been so glad to have a community or even a teacher or pro or something that could have answered my questions at least about the basic confusion about everything. I did not know how Windows stuff works, and my book did only show how to do console/dos programs and I was totally lost about how to do anything. I guess that it even took me a year to realize that programming is about "if, then, else"... it would have helped so much to have at least some basic knowledge about the whole subject as I did not know where to start to realize :p

I wrote one of those on paper a while ago, hehe. It probably wasn't too good, 'cause I was like 8. I don't have it any more and it got pretty long. Right now I want to do a graphical program though. Maybe a graphical choose your own adventure with goofy little moving bitmap sprites that don't animate, just kinda slide....

What I actually have is an engine for CYOA; it comes with a "sample story" which also is actually the documentation for it. Although the CYOA-ness is really just meant to demonstrate the menu system that I created first (all I do is make a vector of "pages" which are menus where the page text is a "title" for the menu, and the options link to subsequent pages).

It's kinda hacked up in a few places though; while there are some impressive ideas, it's a bit overly tricky in spots and I ought to polish it up a bit. (Also, shame on me for inheriting from standard library containers... kinda surprised it doesn't crash at end of program due to lack of virtual dtor or whatever)
