Whew. Yesterday was busy for me (I have a day job too y''know)...
Today will bring much more, including some real ''get-to-work'' articles.

I''m wondering. where is this link you keep talking about on Gamedev''s main page?
Are you talking about www.gamedev.net or www.gamedev.net/gamedev.asp
?
Because I found it nowhere on either page.

Sorry about that. I was trying to coordinate the opening of the section with one of the staff here at GameDev.net, and I guess that he hasn''t gotten around to placing the portal page.
Here''s what it basically would say:
Welcome to the Hands-On Interactive Game Development Tutorial!
This series of tutorials takes a progressive, intensive, and interactive approach at learning how to develop games.
The tutorial itself is available in the Discussion Forums and is entitled "Hands-On Game Development". You are strongly advised to consult the topic "START HERE" if this is your first visit, as it contains vital information on understanding the layout of the forum.
This is serious business, folks. You need to be capable and self-confident through real experience if you intend to take this little hobby of yours seriousely -- collecting tutorials and code snippets isn''t going to cut it. Now is your chance to make a commitment to something that requires more than a passing effort, and reap the rewards that hard work brings.
I''ll see you in the forum.

aka Teej
NOTE: The first series is scheduled to commence on Monday, November 13th.

Welcome to the Hands-On Interactive Game Development Tutorial!
This series of tutorials takes a progressive, intensive, and interactive approach at learning how to develop games.
- Progressive - We start from square one. If you are new to game development, then you''ve come to the right place. Our main goal is to learn how to make games by actually making them. Starting with the basics, we will gradually increase the complexity of the games we explore and create, while our skill in approaching game-related programming challenges increases as well.
- Intensive - Every project in this series is tackled from the ground-up, and every aspect of game development is covered. If we want to gain any proficiency in this lifetime, we''re going to have to move quickly, which makes demands on our time and level of determination.
- Interactive - The best way to learn is by doing, and everyone will be asked to contribute some of their mental energy to the task(s) at hand. Algorithms need to be designed, code needs to be implemented and optimized, and inertia needs to drive the projects contained in this forum. If you really want to gain anything from this series, you need to take one step forward.

Teej, instead of having to rely on others to keep this thread afloat, you can just handle it yourself. In fact, why not use the first thread you started. Just use the modify button on your first post in the thread to update what''s new and put your original post in a quote. This way whenever somethings updated, people can find out what it is and then be in the original thread to read through it and add comments

Gavco: Yes, we''ll be migrating from v7 to v8, but not right away...I''ll wait until we''re all comfortable with the standard DirectX code before updating it.
Gaiiden: Weird; I''ve modified the original topic, but the thread didn''t move up the topics list...
In any event, there''s finally a link to the tutorial start page from GameDev''s main page (look in today''s News headlines).

It''s going to get confusing. I mean, because if a thread gets replied to, it goes up to the top. Eventually, one could have a part 1 thread with a part 3 thread next to a part 5 thread. While this is OK for those who have been with it from the start, someone just discovering this is going to have to jump about, especially when older posts go off the radar.
Perhaps link the appropriate threads on the main start page of the tutorials to maintain order there while the forums go all chaotic?

At first I thought jeranon was talking about my idea
I was like "5th thread? 3rd thread? What the hell??" Then I realized he was talking bout the tutorial forum *smack!* Yeah, that would be a problem if people wanted to go in chronological order, tho they are labeled well.

Yes. We have to work in a forum-type atmosphere, and that means some type of organization.
Think of the forum as a digest -- people start at different times, and the topics represent a chronological exploration of game development. I''ve ensured that every topic is categorized AND numbered, so that someone can navigate properly regardless of which topic is at the top of the list. The GENERAL and DIRECTX categories are meant to be more like tutorials, and the PROJECT series is where all the fun(work) is done. I hope that I described it adequately in the START HERE topic.

I like the way you did that , but I agree with the person above. Links on the main page that are ordered correctly would probably help maintain the status quo for people who might come in say.... 3-4 months down the road. Just think, You may have 25-30 threads in there at that time, OR MORE......
A main start page with links to each thread IN order of importance, and even grouped by General, Directx, OpenGL, etc....
