Im currently in the the thick of programming my game,it is a 2d game. I use dx7, would i run into any problems if i installed the new dx8 runtime and sdk, as i dont want to install the new sdk and then have to rewrite all of my code. Could someone shed some light on this, or am i just being paranoid? Thanks -out- --bah! who needs a signature?!

Well, it should work just fine. Mine started complaining about Direct Input when I installed DX8, but I just had to change it to DI8 (just had to change a couple lines), but other than that nothing''s different.

The readme file with directx 8 SDK tells you to uninstall any previous versions, so I guess you had better uninstall dx7.

You can achieve anything if you want it badly enough.
If it isn't working, take a bath, have a think and try again...

If you want just the run-time you can select run-time only with the sdk installer and leave your existing dx7 sdk alone..

Well there''s no problem with the runtime, but I couldn''t get my DX7 code to compile with the DX8 ddraw.lib. So if I were you I would backup that file (unless someone knows a fix). When I use the DX8 ddraw.lib I get the error "c:\mssdk\lib\ddraw.lib : fatal error LNK1106: invalid file or disk full: cannot seek to 0x389bc793" Is this common, or is my file just corrupt or something?

If your game is 2D meaning that you use the surfaces and BitBlt or BltFast functions in Dx7, then I wouldn''t upgrade to 8 unless you are prepared to do some re-writing. As a purely 2D interface, Dx7 is the way to go. Dx8 supports 2D through the 3D interfaces but it''s different.

On the other hand, Dx8 is very nice. It''s much much simpler to work with that previous versions (I''ve been using Dx since Dx2). A lot of the functionality has been improved and stuff that was there before waiting for an implementation that never came, like 2D alpha blending, is gone. Stuff like that cleans up the interface considerably.

Oh yeah, some of the long names are gone like D3DRENDERSTATE_CULLMODE would now be D3DRS_CULLMODE. That was my favorite thing.

Well, I went and did it. I installed dx8 after unitstalling 7 and now im having trouble getting direct input working properly, big shock! The keyboard sets up fine, but the gamepad initializations are giving me a bit of trouble. Just a warning to others... Got to fiddle with it some more. -out-
