Anyone read a really good book lately or have a favorite author you'd like to share? I'm interested in reading a good book and would like to hear some suggestions. (I prefer Fantasy and SciFi but any type is welcome to be posted ^^) When listing please List Author, Book Title, and Subject at least. Feel free to through in a summary if you wish. ^^
To live, you must be happy. To be happy, you must find excitement. To find excitement, you must observe. nce you observe the world around you, you will find that your life isn't as exciting as it could be. Then, when you find that inspiration, you will find true happiness. O

George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. The best fantasy work I've read. He needs to stop reading books about pizza and get the next book finished.

And I love The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick. It's an industrialized fairy tale world with a dark ambiance. It's a surreal tale of a girl's life, starting out in an iron dragon forge with ogre bosses and finding her own life in a cynical world full of odd characters and stuck-up elves.

I looked him up today at my book store but there were SOOO many books of his there, that I couldn't decide which was the first one. Mind Listing the Name of the first book in the series (If Discworld is the name, I appologize lol).

Well I just finished Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert after reading the previous four, and I am really impressed with the series as a whole.

Regarding Sci-Fi, I highly recommend Iain M Banks' books.

Most of his Sci-Fi books are about a highly advanced race called The Culture. I recommend The Player of Games and The Use Of Weapons.

I just watched Dune not too long ago on the SciFi channel, it was really good. I'll probly buy it. ^^

Edit: The book(s) that is. ^^

I'm a big fan of Neal Stephenson. He's written several books including Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, Quicksilver, and like two others. I've read Snow Crash and The Diamond Age, both of which are FANTASTIC novels, though I actually enjoyed The Diamond Age a little more.

Right now I'm reading "The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury" for my CP English 1 class. I am so hooked on this book even though it's very old. The detail he puts into this book is AMAZING.

I found that reading one book by him is the same as reading them all. At least that's how I felt after reading Da Vinci Code and Digital Fortress.

I'll second this recommendation. He has an excellent wit and spot development of the concepts that he uses. Snow Crash and The Diamond Age are both sci-fi with Snow Crash being one of the most noted near future cyberpunk novels written and The Diamond Age taking place a couple of hundred years in the future when nano-tech is as common place as microwaves are now. Cryptonomicon is two parallel stories, one taking place in the present and the other in WWII, that eventually connect and both deal heavily with, obviously, cryptography. I'm just about finished with Quicksilver now, which is the first book of the Baroque Cycle and is a great piece of historical fiction centered around the parallel births of science (called natural philosophy at the time), secular governments (a result of Protestantism), and capitalism with a great bit of comedy and adventure to keep the story moving.
