Does anyone know what kind of computers programmers and designers use, or the software and hardware best suited for the job.

programmers and designers use computers. The kind you do stuff on.
They use the software that they need for their jobs.

Seriusly, if you are a game programmer you are probally going to use a PC because thats what most games are played on. For software, regardless of what kind of programmer you are, you would use a compiler for your language or depending if your language has one or not, and IDE.

Designers could probally use any type of computer. For software I would assume Word or something to type stuff in.

they use big, fancy supercomputers that only professionals can have and you will never lay eyes on one.

Yes, and in the future, our development machines may have only 1000 vacuum tubes and weigh less than 1.5 tons. Oh how I long for a computer that will fit in a single room.

That's should be a new standard of measurement. Square metres per computer.

Blizzard's computers are like 50 m^2/c. That's more than 100 times better than my computer. I will never be a proper developer.
