Ok, I''m on a budget and I need a high end processor. Is it worth getting the Pentium 4? What about the Athlon or the Duron? Details...need details. Please, make your posts short. if you're on a budget, go duron
latest reviews @ tom's hardware say the p4 sucks fatty, and durons are ass cheap, and pretty good, they beat out the celeron

Yeah buddy, the Duron is a fricking kick ass chip. I have 486, p1-p3''s, Athlon, Cyrix shit, and this Duron sitting in dis here machine.

It is rock solid, and the only probs I had were with the Asus A7V board. A quick bios upgrade fixed that, and at 750MHZ for $200 (board and chip), that is the best deal I have ever gotten. My old celeron just burnt the hell up. Definately a good buy.

yeah, but I''m worried about the 64k cache.

If you don''t like the cache, go get a Thunderbird (like I did)
They''re more expensive though...

celron?

hah!
ok, I may get a T-Bird. What about for high end low cost servers? Is a duron worth it? I''m expecting a massive CPU/Network/Memory load.

No such thing

Running a web server? Cache hits are important when doing repetitive things, like fetching/loading data. Seriously though, you''d have to have a pretty good reason not to go Duron and use the money you save on something else that will be more of a bottleneck (e.g. the HDD). I doubt that an 800MHz Duron will slow you down any, but then again I don''t know what type of server this machine is supposed to be.

Yeah. Webserver, that''s about right. Anyway, I don''t think I''ll be getting a P3 Xeon. That''s just pushing it. I may get the T-Bird if it''s worth it. What do you think?

I''ve got a T-Bird and it smokes. It''s well worth it, but put some real thought into the Duron: It would really suck if the extra money spent on a T-Bird could have been spent on something else that is really slowing down your machine. For most applications you''ll be looking at, maybe, a 5%-10% difference between the Duron and T-Bird. Even then, that''s not for every application. It''s most likely that you''ll be bottlenecked by something else...and there will be no difference at all between the two chips.

Well I''ve made up my mind on the duron. I''m not gonna get it. Anyway, it''s just a battle between the Athlon and the P3/P4. I don''t think the P3 is even a factor since it has as much L2 cache as the Athlon.

Get the T-Bird. P4 is not a factor and won''t be until customized software (SSE2 support) starts appearing. By then Athlons will all be on DDR mainboards (don''t forget, the arrival of DDR mainboards gives you a great upgrade path if you go Athlon).

Good point. Is DDR a practical idea for a webserver? I was considering that, but it sounds a like it''s a little too much

If nothing else, DDR will extend the lifetime of the machine. It''s very hard to say that something is "overkill" for a server. Servers are, almost by definition, machines that use money rather than electricity to power them. More money = better server.
