I'm just wondering, why didn't you decide upon using orco texturing mode.
I find that really simple to do with humanoid figures since the a texture image really only needs to be a front, back, top, bottom, or side view. The most difficulty I find with this method is assigning specific materials to specific regions of the model.With no idea as to which regions I should unwrap for complex models, I tend to stick with this method for my texturing.
