I think that the best way to learn to make games is to make a game... So if anyone has any ideas you should throw them out there, I am into first person shooters myself.

The best way to learn how to make games is to just sit down and study the opengl API. Assuming you have a strong background in c++ it shouldn't be too hard. I picked it up rather quickly. Of course the best way is to sit down and code you own engine. Your first engine probably won't be too impressive but you learn a lot. I wouldn't set out to make a full blown game just yet. You should just work on learning the opengl API. Also I wouldn't waste too much time trying to get a group together; they usually just end up being a waste of time. The best way is to just sit down, study and play around with different ideas.

Its very funny that you said that, because I am reading a book on OpenGL right now. You are right, if you start making a game right away it will never make it to the shelves, but it will provide us with valuable experience and knowlege about game making. So I am going to finish this book and then fool around with OpenGL for a while.

I'm a newbie interested in designing and programming games. I have a little knowledge of C++ but very little experience programming with it. I'm not sure what help I could be to a beginner team but I would be willing to participate in any way I can.

I'm also looking for a more experienced programming team that would be willing to let me work with them for some experience. I do know proper semi-colon placement and I can spell check:D

I would just mainly like to see how a game programming team is run and learn new things along the way while I continue learning C++.

Yeah I visited beginners luck, there is no sign of progress at all, but ofcource thats from the first glance... Anyway I joined beginners unite and we will see how it goes for now. I am eager to start on something and make some progress. other then that you are right, it is the same thing but with fewer people. Then again ive always liked smaller classrooms.

Hi guys, I am brand new to this site and gaming but I am 41, an artist, a write and a conceptualist. I have a great idea for a simple strategy 2d game but need people who know how to code to see it through. Maybe, we can work together and pool our strengths.

Hey,
My name is Chad Smith and I am 15 years old. I have been learning C++ for about 4 weeks now. Although I don't know alot at all I am eager to learn from some other programers. Right now I am currently creating my first game. This game is a Text Based Wrestling Game in a dos console window. It is not very far in development but I am actually seeking help on the match system in the game. I want Game Development to be a carear of mine. I have been looking at classes to take to get my ready for colleage so I can get some programing expierence. I have looked at some colleages and I think I have already found one that seems like what I need. University Of North Texas. Only about 45 minutes from where I live. I might only be 15 but I am looking for colleages already. This is something I am very serious about.

So if y'all don't mind then can I join? Will anyone help me the best they can?

Thanks,
Chad

Sounds like a good place to start out on these forums! I just signed up about 5 minutes ago, and I instantly went to your thread after reading the title=P I have had some game developing experience. I work with everything but programming. I am a fairly new animator, though if I take my time I can create fair works of art. I have become proficient in texturing in the last few months, and sound is one of my facorite things to do. My PC is actually setup a bit like a mini sound studio=)

Hope I can help, I am goin to subscribe now;)
