In openGL, the glTexImage2D function allows you to create a texture from your own RGBA buffer. As far as I can see, in DirectX 8.0, one has to load textures from files. Is there any way to get more direct control in DirectX like in openGL?

use the Direct3DX library. You''ll get more control than you would ever need. OpenGL is quite lame if you compare it with DirectX8!
