I can even program my calculator in C ;-) A windows CE organizer features C++ and Winsock and so on. But you''re trying QBASIC ;-)

I programmed a little text andventure in QBASIC... maybe I should have done it in DHTML...

Saying this is suicide here. Not the QBASIC part, but the "best game ever" part.

Maybe not that difficult as there are not that many games I have seen in Qbasic.

Anyone wonder why

A premature FF7? Aren''t we getting a little full of ourselves here? Doing anything even remotely resembling FF7, a prequel, or a sequel, is impossible in QB. Can you do 500 polygon models in QB? Remember, QB has a limit of about 160 K or something for programs...your models are going to be bigger than that.

Sorry to ridicule you, but...you deserve it. And a lot more, but I''ll leave that up to everyone else.

Just a moment, let me get over my laughing fit...

Ok, that''s better! Now... Say WHAT? Could I get A link to this program of yours? I think I''d have to shoot myself if it actually works!

Just to clarify things a bit:
Is this thing in 3D? If so, your full of $#%@!

The ONLY way your going to get a 3D program to run in a BASIC language is if your using DarkBasic (www.darkbasic.co.uk) which isn''t QBASIC at all.

Here''s a tip: If you want ANYONE to take you seriously here, put out a demo of ANYTHING you''ve done. Who cares what it looks like.

I must say, that''s pretty lame of you to try to put him down like that. He said he was going to make the best game ever for QBasic, it''s not like kieren_j who said he was able to compresse a 3Mb MP3 file into a 16kb file (sorry, I''m still laughing on that one). You can have fairly decent games in QBasic (well, QuickBasic actually, because QBasic is shit... wait, you were talking about QuickBasic, weren''t you ?), the only problem is that it involves some *really* hard work. I''ve seen 3D demos running fine in QB on my old P133Mhz, so I''m really pissed off when I see people saying you can''t get 3D in QB just because they''re too stupid to try anything else than the PSET instruction. so I say YES, there''s a way to make a good game in QB. YES, that would mean it would be the best QB game ever. And you know what ? It could also even be the best game ever, because you don''t need 66 millions polys/sec to make a good game. And YES, it could be a "premature" version of Final Fantasy 7, because FF7''s engine isn''t that great, and I doubt it uses 500 polys for each model (out of the battle scenes). And who cares if it''s limited to 160kb, there''s so much you can pack into that, I can''t believe people have forgotten the true nature of programming, and that just because they are using C++ they think they are lEeT and that all other programming languages sucks. That''s pretty sad.

So I didn''t say I think the guy can do it. I just say that it IS possible, and you guys should be ashamed to act like that. That''s all :|

What was that about glass houses?

Ridiculing someone about compressing 3MB into 16k is almost exactly like someone saying they''re going to make a 1.5 hr. prequel to FF7. I realize 3D is possible in QB--I even have some rotation tables. But I agree with Blue*Omega--this is something that I believe we really need to see to believe. Even if you can do 3D other than Darkbasic, QB 3d is going to have to be wireframe about 99% of the time, since you can''t define a surface to put a texture on.

Yes, I realize FF7 doesn''t use 500 polys. Probably not even in battles, except for summons. Hyperbole is good for making points, though.

But, just for hat''s convenience--if he can do it, more power do him, here''s a link you may be interested in:

http://members.aol.com/tutors

download the zip file to get the DQB libraries. That is, if you''re using QuickBASIC 4.5+. If you''re using regular old MS-DOS/win95 included QBASIC, I really don''t see how you''re going to do it.

Enjoy !
(and don''t forget to compile them with QuickBasic 4.5 for best results !)

A few more notes, look for "CAR compression" or "MP3-beating algorithm" in the GameDev forum to see what I mean about kieren_j. Also, check out that site: http://www.hulla-balloo.com/vplanet/index.shtml, it has a lot of cool QB games, not in 3D, but they''re still way better than the average QB sample.

LET ME CLARIFY MYSELF

Ok. OF course this game is NOT going to be filled with 3d polygons and pre-rendered scences. But the overall concept of the game will be potrayed in my Qbasic Version. There is a replica of the battle system, dialoge, options, and even the materia setup. But the characters and background will look like a jumble of line and circle and Draw statements.

I look forward to showing you all but Im not yet finished with the storyline. The game will be fun and you will be able to play it soon.

ANd I still would like some help

Oh yeah, and it is written in MSDOS Qbasic.

you can achieve some very nice things with QBasic, but to trying to say that it is harder than other API''s is a little much.

I really hope that this project works out fine, but lets not forget that HAT has already stated that it won''t be a full-on polygon affair...........

The guys who were laughing and tacking the p***, haven''t used QBasic, so don''t know of what it can do, but to say they are inferior is also a bit much.

I would like to see how it turns out, so don''t be discouraged by any of these comments HAT, please keep updating us with progress :-)

Okay, I don''t want this to become a flamewar. But, I do have something to say particularly to the anonymous poster who wants to accuse us of inferiority. Ummm...is there a reason you choose to remain anonymous? There are an infinite number of possibile names, so why remain anonymous? Are you afraid of getting flamed because you are against others sharing their opinions?

Let''s go ahead and quote the whole piece:
quote:

by saying that decent stuff can''t be done in qbasic you are admitting your own inferiority.
it is possible, and in my opinion, those who do it should be admired not slagged off by shitface lamers who know how to use some easy api''s.
i''m willing to bet that those who putted this man down, would last 5 seconds in qbasic.

Okay, I realize Qbasic is useful. For that matter, most of my current programs still run at least a test version in qbasic for at least a demo version, just so I can get my ideas down. So don''t tell us we don''t know qb.

As far as going for some easy APIs, let''s see: with no offense or intent to flame, anybody with a hope of professional (or even semi-pro or amateur) game development will not be able to get by on just qbasic. Given the choice between developing 160k dos programs in a max of 640x480 with 16 or 320x200 with 256 colors or developing in 800x600+ with 16.7 million plus colors, I would think 800x600/16.7 mil. wins. Likewise, given the opportunity to either develop with no APIs or develop with several tested, relatively stable APIs, which allow you to concentrate more on effects and actual game content than getting your engine up and running, I think the APIs win.

Now, again, I do realize that things are possible in QBasic, and while I stand by my thought that claiming to develop an FF7 prequel is more than just a little overly ambitious, I wish you luck with whatever you come up with.

So many times programmers get ahead of themselves.

First of all I know C/C++ and DarkBasic and currently trying to learn Java. SO why did i choose Qbasic?
Because I want to show impressive work with such a limited resource. Bigger isnt always better you see. Of course I (or we--I am seeking help) could make something out of darkbasic or C++ but it wouldnt be as "wow" as making something from literal scratch.

ANyway, the storyline is done and so are the weapons and the Materia setup. I dont know if I''ll compile the game or not just incase a bug gets caught in the code.

i remember qbasic, i made some cool stuff in qbasic mixed with assembly back in the day. I invented a database, before i even knew what a database was in QB. also I created a 2d mario type game using page flipping bitmap graphics in 640x480 mode 16 colors. obviously if you want to do anything more than a souped up pacman game or a Digdug, your going to want to move on and take advantage of some real graphics api''s.

oh the best game i''ve seen is Qbasic was a game called Wetspot( or something like that, it resembled Pango), so thats your competition.

it''''s all about a good time!

Loka, look at one of my other posts about DQB. Like I said, it needs QuickBASIC rather than the standard QBASIC (I have both) but it gives you some DX-esque APIs to work with.

Hat, I''d say go ahead and compile it for now--you''ll catch some bugs by looking at the code, but you''ll catch other bugs or decide you want to change some formulas or things if you actually run a compiled (or even interpreted) version.
