I'm looking for a functional sword cane. I want something that is somewhat sharp (i.e. could cut you if you aren't careful) but not something that is limb severing sharp. Do any of you collect or know much about sword canes? If so, what should I look for in terms of manufacturers and quality.

I don't know much about them, other than they're highly illegal in North American last I heard, as well as most of the world.

I remember we took those bad boys to prom, and actually got away with it. Nobody brandished it or anything..we just had'em.

Many varieties of "hidden" weapons are illegal in north america...old fashioned sticker switchblades included.

Yes, many parts you're allowed to carry one of those foolish 50lbs monstrosities, that are nothing like a real sword, on your back, but not a little penknife (One that is an actual writing pen, but pull the back off for a 1inch blade)

You have to be VERY careful with state and local laws, and it is a tricky matter. Some are written to say "Blade" where as others are written to say "knife".

There are however, no laws that I know of (This does not mean that the law doesn't exist! just I don't know about it) that keep you from wearing war hammers!

But a foolish part of the law, I know of a few people that risk getting in trouble with the law because they make pattern welded blades (two or more types of steel layered, and then exposed to look almost like wood grain) and what the problem is that they don't want to let them get wet in the rain, and it is actually illegal for them to put the knife in a handbag or something.

You have the right to bear arms, just not conceal them. Any weapon designed to conceal it's true nature (sword canes) are illegal. You can own a sword and scabbard, because it looks like what it is. You can own a handgun, you just can't carry it around concealed on you unless you've obtained a special permit, and depending on the state you live in, those permits can be relatively difficult to nearly impossible to obtain. Hell, just transporting a legally owned weapon in your vehicle can be tricky.

Except for throwing knives. It's legal (in texas) to conceal a handgun on your person (with permit) and to carry a knife on you, but it is illegal to even own a throwing knife.
The permit to be allowed to carry lockpicks costs more than a cheap handgun and a permit to concel it together.
(I happened to look this all up after seeing Extremely Sharp in the contest prize listing)

Besides the laws varying per state, there's a big difference between owning/transporting/carrying something. Often a lot of things are perfectly legal to own and keep at your home (witness knife collectors), and transport from a store to your home or from your home to an event (knife shows) or a martial arts class or some such... But if you're carrying it on you or have it in your car for no particular reason then you're looking for trouble.

It's a common sense thing really... You don't see people being arrested for putting a chef's knife in a bag to take it home from the store they bought it from, even though "carrying" a concealed blade over 3" in length is illegal.

i think it might be a state by state thing. i know in california it's illegal to own a concealed weapon, and a sword cane is considered a concealed weapon. throwing weapons i believe are also illegal, though i'm not an expert on the laws. i tried to order a sword cane online a couple years ago but they wouldn't ship it to california because it's illegal, so i had it shipped to another state and then a friend shipped it to me. later it got confiscated by authorities because i was being stupid, got off with just a warning.

i'm sure you can find some decent stuff online, like here and here

Check out Smokey Mountain Knife Works. I know they used to sell them. Don't know if they still do. I know in their catalog there are certain items they won't sell to CA or MA, but all other states are fine. This is things like dagger or butterfly knives. I always wondered like when I lived in Maine, if it is legal to own but not legal to carry certain weapons. I own butterly knives, pen knives, etc, and I always wondered if it was legal. You know what, better not to ask. Unless someone raids your house, you'll be fine.
