Ok guys, time to get this puppy on the way I know DelphiX inside out but i find that much of that knowlege is not applicable to DX8 with the new headers. Many (including me), would benefit from such tutorials. We would need a couple of basic DX8 tutorials: Basics: - Basic screen initilization windowed/fullscreen.. Ortho/Perspective .. etc. - How to display a simple background image - How sprites are handled Moving into the 3rd dimentia - Loading a .x obj with the new functions - Translating / rotations / scaling - Camera Lookat function - Apply a simple material to an object - Adding one light Just a few simple ones to get people started would be great. Short / commented tuts. Add to the list of topics as needed. Asking :'' how can i make a RTS in DX8 '' isn''t that realistic.. remember - simple / short. hehehe What do you guys think ? Gunner.

Great rhyme indeed

It was your DX8 tut that actually prompted me to post the above.
I was saying to myself :wouldn''t it be great if we had more of these.

I also found antoher great c++ DX8 tut from Furby, should be easy to convert to Delphi.

I''m downloading the SDK as we speak, i''ll take a look at those sdk examples and see how far i can convert them b4 i get stumped.

Stay tuned for questions.. heheh

All of these are in the SDK samples. But then, not everyone will have downloaded the SDK and not everyone will understand C++, so Delphi samples would be nice.

- Loading a .x obj with the new functions

This requires conversion of the D3DX libraries, which I am in the process of doing right now for my own project. A conversion may already be underway for the Delphi Graphics DirectX headers, but I could not find out for sure so I started my own.

- Translating / rotations / scaling

All these are taken care of in the D3DX math library.

- Camera Lookat function

This is also in the D3DX math library. If you have the SDK, take a look at D3DXMatrixLookAtRH() and D3DXMatrixLookAtLH().

- Apply a simple material to an object
- Adding one light

These are a little bit more complex, but a sample should not be that difficult. I had a simple D3D7 demo running with three lights spinning around some textured cubes and an object loaded from a .X file. Now I have to do is convert that to D3D8.

I think the DelphiGames eGroup is doing a fair ammount of this work too.

ARGH!!! - I''ve tried again and again to get that DX8 example of whiskey''s (the one at ProHost) - for some reason the download link simply reloads the page.

What am I doing wrong??

PS - ...*grinZ* - a bit of-topic... but... anybody know how to kill the red-dragon in Baldur''s Gate 2? - The best I''ve managed so far is to inflict a massive 8 points of damage... ooooh...

Sly, awsome !

LoreKeeper, i have mirrored whiskey''s DX8 sample until he fixes his broken link, d/l it from:

http://pages.infinit.net/rennug/dx8demo.zip

As for Baldur''s Gate''s 2 Red dragon, try Psi storming it a few times, uhmm wait a minute.. no templars in BG2.. sorry dunno

Whew!! ThanX Guns! - ...so... now I''ve gut-the-tut

Now I just have to get the DX8 run-times somewhere...

*GrinZ* - howZ that for counting your chickens before they are hatched? :D

PS - the darn dragon is still at large... I''ve given up for the time being... - even with 105% Fire-Resistance and Zero-Spells left in the dragon I can not beat the stupid beast.

(PPS - the 8 points of damage I mentioned earlier... they were caused by the fire-elementals I had summoned earlier...)

This is not my fault ... :[

ProHost comes with a lot of features and with a lot of banners on the other side ...

The worst, if you wanna download zip-files you get redirected to a prohost-download site on which you have to click the url again ... if you get redirected to that damn site - but even this does not seem to work on most pc''s

Thank you for mirroring that file, I don''t know how I can fix that in the moment

May the source be with you

If you need a file mirrored, just send it in, or point me to the link. We''ve got tons of space here at gamedev.net...

Whoohooo! - everythang is working smooooothly like a baby''s bottom. Whiskey''s cylinder-wobbling-with-light-rotating-around-it thing is working prettily... finally chance to learn and understand a bit of this DX8 stuff...

Please Keep Everybody posted on additional efforts; I (and surely several others) find them invaluable.
